About MacDonald Hotel & Cabins

MacDonald Hotel & Cabins combines a traditional hotel building with separate cabin accommodation, set on Fort William Road in Kinlochleven, with Ben Nevis as a notable point of interest nearby and Fort William within reach for those exploring further afield. The mix of formats gives guests a choice between hotel comfort and a more independent cabin stay, all within the same grounds.

Hotel rooms come with en-suite bathrooms and drinks provided, and are kept clean and comfortable throughout. The restaurant serves a distinctive Scotland-Indian fusion menu alongside breakfast, packed lunches and kids' meals, with a bar on site for evening drinks and outdoor seating for warmer days. Staff are friendly, though service can be slow at busy times, and while the hotel rooms are well kept, the cabins don't always match that standard of maintenance.

Other facilities include free WiFi, a garden and picnic area, laundry service, luggage storage and 24 hour reception, with free on-site parking for those arriving by car. Pets are welcome, and the surrounding area offers walking routes plus nearby pubs, bars and restaurants for evenings out. The views from the property are consistently singled out as one of its strongest features.

I booked and then read the reviews which made me a bit worried. However I don’t understand why it gets so many bad reviews… the worst thing that happened during my stay is that I had to wait 4 minutes for the reception to open. Please note that I stayed in a hotel room and not in a cabin, and I think many of the negative reviews are about the cabins. Anyhow, I arrived early, had lovely lunch (I highly recommend to order from the indian menu my food was delicious, in fact I went back for dinner to have some more). The naan bread was delicious. My room was lovely, freshly cleaned, and smelled pleasantly of lemon cleaning products. The shower was hot (the water pressure wasn’t amazing, but I didn’t mind). shampoo and body wash was provided. Clean towels, clean bedding. Basic coffee and tea. Nothing mind blowing and I understand that some people expect luxury for the price. Unfortunately, that is not the reality of small villages in Scotland. Please don’t compare the standards in Edinburgh or Glasgow with those in more remote areas. Scotland is expensive, many places are isolated, and the local economy is not great, which is reflected in the hospitality industry. I stayed in many hotels in scotland and I’m surprised how nice the room was especially considering that the hotel mainly caters to hikers (and they are messy!). I can recommend booking the room, It’s a great place to rest before the last leg of the WHW. Side note, hotel is dog friendly!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I genuinely cannot recommend the McDonald Hotel highly enough. From the moment we arrived, Jae made us feel incredibly welcome. His hospitality is second to none, and it's clear he genuinely cares about every guest having the best possible stay. Nothing was too much trouble, and he went above and beyond to make our visit unforgettable. The hotel itself is in a stunning location with breathtaking views in every direction. Waking up surrounded by the Highlands is something special, and the scenery alone is worth the trip. The food deserves a review of its own. Every meal was absolutely incredible—fresh, beautifully cooked, generously portioned, and full of flavour. It was genuinely some of the best food we've had on our travels. The rooms were comfortable, spotless, and had everything we needed, making it the perfect base for exploring Glencoe, Glenfinnan and the surrounding area. What really sets this place apart, though, is the atmosphere that Jae has created. You arrive as a guest but leave feeling like you've been looked after by a friend. It's rare to find that level of warmth and genuine care. If you're looking for outstanding hospitality, amazing food, spectacular scenery and exceptional value for money, stop searching and book the McDonald Hotel in Kinlochleven. We will 100% be back, and I honestly can't thank Jae enough for making our trip so memorable. Thank you, Jae—you've been an absolute legend. ★★★★★

This place would be amazing if some maintenance were done. It feels like it is all falling apart. We got a cabin and found there was mould in every corner. One of the taps in the communal area shot water out the side towards the fuse box. For the amount we paid, a few decent taps would be appreciated. I will say the view is stunning, and the food looked and smelled delightful

I booked here last minute as my friend from Sweden and I were doing some sightseeing in the area. Unfortunately the cabin we had was poorly maintained with big gaps in the wood meaning that midges got in. I was expecting some midgies as I’m Scottish but to have such poorly maintained cabins meant I barely got any sleep. My friends bed was also very wobbly! The shared facilities of the showers, toilets and sink area also needs some maintenance with taps hanging off and locks not working. When the power cut out to several cabins in the morning they were quick to sort it but didn’t care about how the rest of our stay was. It could be so much nicer and location is beautiful.
