About Smardale Mill Shepods
Tucked into dramatic Cumbrian fell country on a working farm, Smardale Mill Shepods offers smartly fitted glamping pods where comfort meets wilderness. Each 'shepod' comes with a proper kitchen (fridge, cooker, breakfast bar), cosy living space, double bed and full-size shower – ideal for warming up after a day on the fells. The site enjoys a high rating for its peaceful, remote setting and spectacular views, though it's surprisingly accessible from the M6.
Smardale Nature Reserve sits just five minutes away, with a lovely circular trail along the old railway line to Smardale Gill Viaduct. Anglers can try their luck on a mile of private fishing along the Scandal river. For supplies or a proper pub meal – think fine regional food and Yorkshire puddings with Sunday roasts – Kirkby Stephen is a ten-minute drive. Linen is provided for the double bed but not the sofa bed, worth noting if you're planning a larger group.

We stayed at Easter 2022 I don’t tend to leave reviews hence why I’ve taken this long to get around to it but it deserves one. The farm owner greeted us on our arrival and told us we could walk anywhere with no worries (we had our dog with us) as the land all around for a while was theirs. Which was great to hear as we live in Sheffield city centre and hadn’t taken our dog away before at that point and didn't want to be tense about upsetting any farmers by walking through their livestock with him. Nice stream running through the fields as well which our dog enjoyed. The pod was very nicely decorated and kitted out. There was nothing cheap about fitting out these huts. We were very comfortable there. We were pleased with it and plan to return. It was beautiful looking out/sitting out the front. The owner left us some easter cakes and dog treats which was a lovely unexpected touch. There were also fresh eggs available. If you want to get into nature and out of a busy life this is a great place to go. All the pubs we tried in the village were dog friendly and very friendly staff/locals.

Spent 2 nights at The Elm Shepod. Lovely cabin with everything that you need. Great that it's dog friendly too! Only an 8 minute drive to Kirkby Stephen a lovely village. Or we also walked there which was around 45 minutes along the road. Has lovely cafes, pubs and shops near. The Shepod is on Smardale Mill and you can see all the animals being taken care of. The shower in the cabin was lovely, great supply of items in the kitchen to cook with. Nice outside seating area too which I can imagine is lovely in the warmer weather but it was way too windy for us this weekend. Overall a great weekend at a very decent price. Would recommend if you want time away from the city.

Recently I stayed here, in The Elm, Shepod, which I noticed straight away, is set in an excellent location with beautiful surroundings of the Cumbrian countryside. Plenty of walks close by and a short drive to the traditional market town of Kirkby Stephen. The Shepod was spotlessly clean and warm (even on a winters day). The Shepod has an en-suite and a fully equipped kitchen with all the essentials, TV and under bed storage, if needed. The owner is a perfect host as nothing was too much trouble and had a prompt response to any queries I had. Overall reasonably priced, pet friendly and a very enjoyable stay I will be visiting again. Thank you for making us feel welcome.
