About The Kirkwall Hotel

Harbour views from the bedroom windows are the standout feature at The Kirkwall Hotel, set on Harbour Street in the heart of Kirkwall, Orkney Islands. Rooms are comfortable and clean, with en-suite bathrooms, family rooms and accessible rooms available, plus drinks available in room and a lift for easier access to upper floors.

The restaurant serves food that draws particular praise, including local produce and a proper breakfast, while the well-stocked bar and outdoor seating make good spots to unwind. Packed lunches can be arranged for days out, and there's meeting room space for those combining business with the trip. Staff are friendly and helpful, though service can be a little disorganised at busier times. Free WiFi, free parking and luggage storage are all provided, and dogs are welcome throughout.

Kirkwall itself is right on the doorstep, with Kirkwall Airport also nearby for easy access. The surrounding area suits walkers and cyclists, with golf, fishing and watersports all within reach, plus pubs, restaurants and other entertainment close by for evenings out.

What a great place. Exceptional service. Good food. Warm welcome. Very well stocked bar with very helpful bar staff. Also efficiently helped us out when car problems made us have to change our plans at the last minute. Perfect for our 2 dogs as well. Thank you to all the Kirkwall Hotel Team!

136 years old and still comfy and hospitable. The noise from the street on the weekends could bother someone, but with all the hiking we did it was quick to sleep. Everything was clean. Staff was more than helpful and cheerful. The historical pictures were amazing.

Such a great location and hotel with charm and history. Lovely rooms overlooking the bay and harbour. Excellent restaurant, bar and breakfasts. Staff welcoming, helpful and efficient. Would certainly recommend it. Its location made it great to catch the airport bus which is just minutes away and you could easily wander around the harbour and town, with its charming shops and tea rooms.

We visited Kirkwall Hotel for 3 dinners whilst on holidays. We did not have accommodation here. Each time we were greeted by friendly staff. We enjoyed pre-dinner drinks in the bar lounge area (great Singapore Slings). They have an extensive range of Whiskey to try. At 6pm the restaurant opens and we couldn’t fault the menu, presentation and flavour of the dishes we had. The hotel has a menu with nutritious balance. Catering for meat and vegetarian diets. We ate the salmon with vegetables and mash, grilled haddock with vegetables and a roast beef with vegetables (on different nights). They have a nice choice of desserts to choose from as well. Tea or coffee is offered. A great selection of wines to pick from. If your bill is £80 or more you keep your receipt and the next time you dine there for lunch or dinner they offer a complimentary bottle of wine or Prosecco with your meal. NB: they include a a tip within the receipt so let them known if don’t want this added to your invoice. Highly recommend. Probably best to book ahead in the summertime 😊
