About Merewood Country House

Views over Lake Windermere are the first thing to strike anyone arriving at Merewood Country House, a hotel set among gardens on Ambleside Road with the fells rising behind. The grounds are well kept and give way to open mountain views, making the outdoor seating a genuine draw rather than an afterthought.

The 20 rooms are en-suite, with family and accessible options available, and come with drinks and room service on request. Guests can expect spotless, comfortable spaces, and there's a restaurant and bar on site serving breakfast, packed lunches and a tasting menu, along with an afternoon tea that has become something of a fixture. The hotel doubles as a wedding venue, and the kitchen's reputation is a large part of that appeal. Staff are attentive and consistently praised for making guests feel looked after.

Beyond the restaurant and bar, there's an indoor pool, gym and spa with sauna, plus meeting rooms and business facilities for those combining work with a stay. Outside, Windermere's walking and cycling routes, including Orrest Head, are within easy reach, along with golf, fishing and watersports nearby. Free on-site parking and pet-friendly rooms make it a straightforward base for exploring the Lakes.

I eloped here with my wonderful fiancée to get married. It was the most perfect day I could have hoped for. The building is fantastic and the location is superb. The staff are incredibly friendly and attentive. The food is out of this world. I can't recommend this place highly enough, everyone who works there should be proud of the job they're are doing. 10/10

Went for the weekend to a fabulous wedding. The first night, the evening meal was very disappointing, very expensive for what it was. We sat on a table with seven of us, two of our party got their food the other five had to wait 20 minutes later for theirs to arrive , by which time the other two had finished their meals. Ours came out and mine and my friends meals were cold. Very poor to say how much they charge and service charge on top of all food and drinks. They did replace our food but to be honest I have had better.

Lovely place and clean. Disappointed the way we were welcomed or should I say not welcomed. Looking for the entrance, door we thought was locked but we could hear people talking inside. Went in through the bar and stood a bit while 2 ladies talking, we knew they noticed us but continued with their chat before they said hello. We were told the door was opened in a sarcastic way by I think the manager and we just smiled. Room could have been perfect but bathroom’s soap(empty bottle) and shampoo were too high to reach. Filled one of the mugs with soap from the sink to use for shower then. For breakfast no other choice but 8:30 or 9:30, chose the latter but oh!dear! Nothing left and staff seemed to be in a hurry to finish. No toast offered, no glasses for juice, no fruits any more. And they forgot to give me coffee which I had to request too, never mind the toast that I was looking forward to have. Danish pastries were not replenished too. I knew it was the last batch for breakfast but customers deserve to have same service with those earlier ones and not to have leftovers, not acceptable.

Back from our 'Just Us' wedding at Merewood, it was all we wanted and more. We were made to feel welcome, comfortable and special from the off! All staff were amazing, special thanks to Rhiannon from the wedding team, who even took some photos for us! And to Steve, behind the bar and served dinner, cheers! The day itself was perfect, no stress and very intimate. Our room was wonderful and looked out over Lake Windermere, there were lovely gifts left us with a cooled bottle of prosecco! The food was amazing, the afternoon tea was fab and the tasting menu on the evening of our wedding was outstanding. We cannot recommend Merewood enough and we will certainly be back to celebrate an anniversary! Massive thanks to all staff, you are a great team!
