About Mortal Man

Off-grid and refreshingly laid-back, this wild pop-up camping field sits just below The Mortal Man Inn in Troutbeck Valley, ten minutes' drive from Windermere. Pitch where you fancy on the non-electric grass—there's plenty of space—and wake to stunning sunrise views over the fells, with a fell-fed stream burbling alongside the bottom of the field. Start the day with the site's breakfast deal of a brew and a barm (for an additional fee), then head straight out onto walking and cycling routes that start from the pitches themselves.

The setting is properly peaceful, though you'll need to come prepared: there's no running water, so bring what you need for a true back-to-basics stay. After a day exploring the Lake District National Park, you're less than five minutes' stroll to the pub, where generous portions of homemade food—venison pie, fish and chips—and a roaring fire await. Dog-friendly throughout, with welcoming staff and local drinks, it's the perfect end to a day on the fells.

I only experienced the camp site, this review has nothing to do with the hotel or restaurant. I'm leaving this review as from what I can tell, this is a newly set up camp site, and as an avid camper I feel it needs some pointers. Unfortunately I have to say the camping experience was pretty poor. The first issue was that during the whole Pitchup booking process, there was no mention of not being able to park by your pitch, until I received a booking email. This really needs to be made clearer on Pitchup pre-booking. This wouldn't be too bad if you could actually park anywhere near the field; When I got there, there were a few cars completely blocking the lane, so I would have had to reverse all the way down to unload (not ideal in my large van), so I was forced to park near the pub and lug all my gear down the lane, which was about 3 trips. Also, there were far too many tents for the size of the field. I'm not exaggerating when I say someone pitched next to me, and their guy ropes were almost touching my tent. It felt more like a festival than a relaxing campsite. People talking in their own tent sounded like they were sat in the vestibule of my tent. I don't see why there can't be a small section of the field reserved for parking (so you can be closer for unloading), with a reduced amount of tents. There were other small things like a lengthy check-in process, and poor portaloos, but I can forgive these. We ended up leaving after 1 night, rather than staying for our originally booked 2. Not trying to be negative, I just genuinely feel like the place needs some adjustments.

Stayed here for the weekend and was such a nice place to spend some time . Very nice peaceful village with amazing views from the beer gardens . Great location to explore the Lake District and local area. Emily was very helpful and friendly. Mike and Chris the chefs made delicious meals and Jaime the barman was great. Thanks to all the staff and I will definitely be back again soon.

We had a lovely visit. The food and drink were great, good selection at the bar. Beautiful beer garden surrounded by even more fantastic scenery. The stand out however was the staff, going above and beyond to make our stay as comfortable as possible. It's a bit out of the way, but that only adds to the charm, definitely worth the hike if you're in the area.
