About Rowardennan Hotel

Rowardennan is where the eastern shore road stops and the West Highland Way continues on foot, and the hotel sits at that transition point with the loch in front and Ben Lomond directly behind. For walkers this is one of the most useful addresses on the whole loch: the main path to the summit of Ben Lomond starts from the car park a few minutes away, and the Way runs past the door towards Inversnaid.

There are 24 bedrooms in double, twin and triple configurations, many with views over the loch or up towards the mountain, plus four lodges available for short and longer stays. Dogs are welcome throughout, which matters on a route where a lot of walkers travel with one. The bar and restaurant serve residents and passing walkers, and in summer the beer garden by the water is hard to beat.

The trade-off is isolation. The nearest shop and additional pubs are at Balmaha, about seven miles back down a narrow road, and mobile signal is patchy. That is precisely the appeal for many guests: once the day visitors have gone, the eastern shore is very quiet indeed. Book well ahead in walking season, as the hotel absorbs a good share of West Highland Way traffic.

I was absolutely delighted with my stay at this hotel while hiking the whw. Receptionist was kind and provided a warm welcome. Communication regarding a packed lunch request was good both before and during my stay. My room was exceptionally comfortable and a great place to rest before a challenging day walking. Food was good in the bar as was the service. I have no words for the location! Stunning isn't enough. Thanks also to Timi in the great little shop for the advice and help. This was a highlight on what was an incredible trip. 😊

This hotel was our second stop along the West Highland Way. After a challenging day of hiking with plenty of elevation gain, we arrived at this beautiful hotel. It is situated in a stunning lakeside location, where we were able to enjoy a lovely sunset. The rooms may be a little dated, but they are very clean, which is ultimately what matters most to us. In the evening, we enjoyed a delicious dinner in the hotel's restaurant. The staff were very friendly, and the service was excellent. The value for money is outstanding. The next morning, we also enjoyed a generous and tasty breakfast before continuing our hike.

Fabulous location and exceptional dinner. We had 2 rooms - the triple was beautiful. Sadly our double room had a window overlooking the kitchen exhaust fan. It will always remain the chip room in our memory. Special shout out to Joey at check in who was super friendly.

My boyfriend and I stayed here on the WHW. I had booked a 3person-lodge and that was incredible. The views: insane. The shower: amazing after a long day. The weather was warm, so we could open the doors and windows and the breeze was perfect. 10/10 recommend.
