About City Inn Express Hotel

Twenty-one rooms make up City Inn Express Hotel, a compact and simply-run budget hotel on Mare Street in Hackney. It's the kind of place built for practicality rather than fuss, with a lift, air conditioning and free WiFi throughout, and a small garden to sit in when the weather allows.

Rooms are kept clean and tend towards the compact side, with fewer extras than you'd find at a larger hotel, so this suits guests who want a straightforward base rather than a destination in itself. Breakfast is served on-site, and there's a restaurant and bar for evening meals or a drink without needing to head out. Chargeable on-site parking is available for those driving in.

Mare Street itself has plenty of pubs, bars and restaurants within easy reach, and the location gives good access to transport links across London. Staff are on hand with concierge services and luggage storage, useful for guests passing through or exploring the city on a budget.

I would like to start by saying the positive, which was that the staff was lovely, but I find it hard to recommend staying here longer than one night. Me and a friend stayed over for a concert in a twin room during a heatwave which I absolutely do not recommend doing at this hotel. there was no air conditioning or way of keeping cool beyond a fan that was broken so that it wouldn’t tilt towards our beds, and the windows only crack open slightly. The beds were very hard, slim and pushed very close together for the price we paid (over £130 per night) but manageable for a single night stay. the only utility in the room is a small toilet with a shower. we did not test the shower, but the tap was missing it’s filter so it kind of sprays everywhere. the plug sockets were also covered by the bedside tables which is a little annoying. We were also placed next to what i can only assume was the boiler room, because it was periodically going off behind us throughout the day/night. other than that, the location feels a little strange and out of the way but not entirely unsafe and is accessible for bus routes, and it seemed generally clean.

Perfect bolt hole for an evening - reasonably priced, fans available and big windows to beat the summer heat. Basic, clean, simple - friendly service. Bathroom smelled strongly of cigarettes which was my only negative - but it’s in a great location and exactly what you need if looking for somewhere to rest your head and otherwise be out and about. Would stay again!

They have an odd policy where they require you to leave your room key at the reception every time you leave, because “they’ve had issues with guests losing keys in the past”. The night before our check out, we came back to the hotel to be told that they didn’t have the key and that the housekeeper who changed our sheets that morning must’ve mistakenly taken it home. To remedy this, they asked us if it would be okay to spend the night in a different room because they didn’t have a copy of the key! We had to wait for an hour and a half for them to get in touch with the housekeeper and get the key, at which point it was 11:30pm. If you prioritize predictability and a certain level of comfort, I’d very strongly recommend against this place.

We got in after being awake for nearly 30 hours and they let us check-in a few hours early with no extra charge. So kind and understanding. Really appreciate them hooking us up like that. The rooms are a little small, but perfectly fine for what we needed them for. Location is right next to some great pubs and restaurants. Greta stay all in all.
