A rare taste of Japan in London, paired with that hard-to-find Japanese warmth and hospitality. The perfectly grilled unagi don—every bite reminded me of Kyoto: sweet, smoky, melt-in-the-mouth goodness. The photos speak for themselves. Thank you, So, for such a delicious weekend 🍱🤍

I ordered the todays special as in lunch menu , the beef has too much grease in it, also the portion is extreme little, filled with some carrot and potato. The colour of the egg omelette also doesnt look very well, but it doesnt taste bad. The fried pork cutlet is the only positive, can tell it is made in restaurant but not frozen product. Also the price is also on a higher end regarding the less portion. It used to be a lot more. There is no way the lunch set itself cost 17.9 + service charge with that amount of beef.

For my birthday, I decided to try Japanese cuisine for the very first time in a non-westernised, non-commercialised restaurant in which a true taste of Japan could be properly experienced. Their menu was limited but with good reason as they perfected what they served, embodying the phrase ‘less is more.’ I am beyond happy to say that the So restaurant in London delivered every part of my culinary desires combined with friendly and attentive customer service! Upon arrival with my dad and brother, we were welcomed with all the kind hospitality needed to warm us up on a chilly autumn’s evening. The staff were few but exceptionally gifted in their dedication to every customer, always smiling and happy to serve, creating a tranquil atmosphere that put us at ease immediately. They were very understanding of our lack of experience with Japanese cuisine and patiently explained their menu to us in detail. I was deeply interested in their Unagi Kabayaki (grilled eel with a sweet savoury glaze) ever since I saw it in a food show based in Japan. I never thought you could find such a specialty dish in England and was drawn to the So restaurant for this specific reason. They served it to me in an Una Ju form (grilled eel served on top of rice in a rice box) and it did not disappoint! The texture of the rice was fluffy and creamy, combining with the flavours of the grilled eel perfectly. It was cooked beautifully with a slightly charred skin concealing within a white, buttery meat that melted in my mouth. I highly recommend this dish to anyone visiting. We also tried the sushi (Nigiri), including the bluefin tuna, yellowtail, and salmon, all of which were clean tasting and rich in texture. The bluefin tuna and salmon were the highlights for me. Finally, we finished the meal with an assortment of desserts, including the matcha chocolate cake and hojicha terrine, delightfully recommended to us by the lovely lady serving us. She surprised me with a happy birthday message and song along with all the other staff! They also generously blessed us with one dessert and some genmaicha (roasted brown rice green tea) on the house as a most welcome surprise. I was truly comforted and satisfied by the end of my visit and can honestly say that coming to the So restaurant was the highlight of my birthday. It was worth every penny spent! My only regret is that I did not get to thank the lovely lady who served us with such heartfelt warmth for the incredible meal - If you’re reading this, thank you so much for making my birthday an extra special one! Your kindness completed our experience with you. After all, what is a beautifully crafted meal if not united with all the warmth and hospitality you showed toward us on such a special day? I will definitely be visiting again in the near future.
