About Manchester Portland By Sunday

Two hundred and twenty-nine rooms fill Manchester Portland By Sunday, a hotel spread across 3 to 5 Portland Street in the heart of Manchester. The scale of the place means there's a genuine buzz to it, backed up by 24 hour reception, a lift, and staff who are consistently singled out as friendly and helpful.

Rooms come with en-suite bathrooms and air conditioning, and accessible rooms are available. The decor has a quirky edge that guests tend to enjoy, though some rooms show their age and could do with more careful upkeep. Showers, at least, are reliably strong. There's a restaurant and bar on site, with further pubs, bars and restaurants within easy reach nearby.

The Portland Street address puts guests firmly in the centre of Manchester, close to Manchester Piccadilly and within reach of Tatton Park for those wanting a day out beyond the city. There's no parking at the hotel itself, so anyone driving will need to plan for that, but for value and location it holds up well.

The location of this hotel is brilliant- that is the only positive. There is a female on the day staff who clearly dislikes customers and why she is working in customer service is a mystery. She is rude, lacks manners and treats everything like a chore. We asked for towels having just come back from a run and she asked if we needed them now as she was busy?? The other three interactions we had with her were equally disappointing. The room was facing the light well, so no daylight, constant hum of the air conditioning units, opposite the lifts and the walls are made of paper - do not expect a peaceful nights sleep if you allocated one of these rooms. You can sleep when your neighbours sleep otherwise you hear every conversation, every phone call, every video being watched. The beds are fine- reasonable sleep quality. They charge you £3 to leave a bag for the day. Hostels where you pay £20 a night in a dorm don’t charge to leave bags - it leaves a nasty taste and is another example of this hotel just being ‘cheap’, without a cheap price tag. There are lots of hotels in Manchester with equally good locations, would highly recommend to stay in one of those, they cannot be worse than this one.

I stayed here for one night and found it good for a short solo stay. Check-in was very quick, taking less than two minutes, and the room, while small, was adequate for one person just needing a place to rest. It had a 90cm bed, a bedside table, and a small desk, and everything was clean on arrival. Amenities were quite basic, with an all-in-one soap, black tea, instant coffee, and limited sugar. Housekeeping is only provided on the third day unless requested, which is worth knowing in advance. The WiFi was fast and reliable, which was a plus. I also appreciated the complimentary late check-out, as standard late check-out is £10 per hour subject to availability. The main downside was the noise from some of the room equipment. The air conditioner made an unpleasant cricket-like chirping sound, and the hair dryer also squeaked. The immediate surroundings are fairly quiet, but it is within walking distance of livelier areas, including nightlife, the canal with coffee shops, and stations. The lobby was also a useful place to sit after check-out.

Quirky rooms and interesting decor. Rooms were clean and tidy. No problem with getting more tea or coffee sachets from reception. Considering how much rain there is in Manchester, umbrellas should be available at the desk- either for hire or have ones that are left behind on offer. There were no spare pillows or blankets in the wardrobe. Breakfast is good value - very helpful staff in the restaurant.

For the price that we paid this place is amazing. We faced the road but the soundproofing on the window was fab. The bed was clean, plenty of tea, coffee, hairdryer, iron. Lovely hot shower. Yes it could do with a lick of paint but for one night this place really served its purpose. Staff were lovely too.
