Dryburgh Abbey Hotel occupies a mid-nineteenth century baronial house set within eleven acres of private grounds on a wooded bend of the River Tweed, directly beside the ruins of Dryburgh Abbey, burial place of Sir Walter Scott. The hotel is a few minutes' drive from Melrose and makes an appealing base for visitors who want space and quiet alongside easy access to the town.
Bedrooms are spread across the main house and adjoining wings, with the better rooms looking out over the river or the abbey ruins themselves. Public areas keep much of the building's original character, including wood panelling and open fires, and the grounds include a heated outdoor pool, tennis court and putting green alongside riverside walks that lead straight to the abbey gate.
The restaurant makes use of Borders produce, including game and Tweed salmon, and the hotel's setting away from the road means evenings are notably peaceful. It suits couples and older visitors looking for a country house stay rather than a town centre base, with Melrose, Abbotsford and the other Borders abbeys all within a short drive.

We had a lovely stay at Dryburgh Abbey Hotel. The room was small but adequate for two of us and our cocker spaniel. The bathroom was a good size with a shower over the bath. All of the staff we encountered were friendly and helpful. The setting is fantastic. The grounds are well kept and offer plenty of room to give the dog a walk. The Abbey ruin is next to the hotel grounds and well worth a visit. Overall there is a sense of peace about the hotel and we would deffinatelh visit again

The location of the hotel is really fantastic, very picturesque surroundings, unfortunately couldn't see anything from our room. The noice from upstairs was horrendous. The bedding was stained and the room was very tired, other than the bathroom which was actually newly refitted. The breakfast was mediocre at best, and took a long time to arrive, other guests seemed to be getting wrong orders and a lot was sent back.

Our Valentine’s Day dinner at the Dryburgh Abbey Hotel was a massive LETDOWN from start to finish. We began the evening waiting 10 minutes in an empty foyer before anyone even acknowledged us. Once seated, the experience didn't improve. The "restaurant" was freezing, dark, and lacked any sense of intimacy. To make matters worse, the staff were playing loud, unromantic music that completely killed the Valentine's mood. Even the restrooms felt like an "ice box"it felt like they were cutting costs on heating at every opportunity. For the price point, the quality was atrocious. The pastry on my meal was incredibly thick, rock-hard, and overcooked. The food was simultaneously tasteless and overly salty. There was nothing "special" about this menu other than the inflated price tag. The soup and dessert were basic and nothing special about them. We ended up paying nearly £100 for 3 course meals and three basic drinks (one cider and two alcohol-free beers). For the level of service and food quality we received, this was a complete RIP-OFF feeling. We will certainly not be returning and would suggest looking elsewhere if you want a warm welcome or a decent meal.

I enjoyed a holiday with my husband last week at the Dryburgh Abbey. As on our last visit the staff were friendly, the food excellent and there were beautiful views from the windows. A lovely area to explore too.
