The George and Abbotsford Hotel occupies a nineteenth century former coaching inn on Melrose High Street, a three minute walk from the abbey. Sir Walter Scott and William Wordsworth are both said to have visited the inn in its earlier days, and the building retains much of that period character alongside more recent updates.

Stayed here for a couple of days on a walking trip. Lovely historic hotel, right in the centre of Melrose. Our room was very spacious and comfortable with everything we needed. Staff extremely friendly and helpful, and the food was great. We’ll definitely be back again.

On a visit to Melrose, we noticed a sign as we were passing this hotel telling us there were gluten-free options on the menus - and gf fish & chips! A rarety, and I have to say the tastiest battered cod I've had for years, and that goes for the chips too. Highly recommended! 😋

I can’t vouch for the rooms which I think bias the rating but as a pub this place is better than most in The Borders. It’s a bit rough round the edges but the only place locally with anywhere close to a decent cask selection. Nice sheltered space out the back for sunny days too.

The staff were so unbelievably helpful and friendly. The food was delicious and the room was perfect. Could not have asked for more. Me and my dog were doing a long distance charity walk and the staff made this overnight stop really great helping with my baggage transfer and everything, thanks so much Kimberley & Flint xx
