About The Famous Star Hotel

Hearty, generously portioned food is the main draw at The Famous Star Hotel, where the restaurant has built a following for dishes like steak pie, braised beef, and a proper Sunday roast, all served at reasonable prices in a calm, welcoming dining room. There's a bar on site too, and staff are consistently noted for being friendly and accommodating, which sets the tone for the rest of a stay.

The hotel itself sits on the High Street in Moffat, Dumfries and Galloway, with just eight rooms, so it stays small-scale and personal. Rooms come with air conditioning and drinks provided, and the wider building includes a lift, free WiFi, and breakfast to start the day. Guests looking to relax further can use the indoor swimming pool, gym, and spa or sauna, while the garden offers a quieter outdoor spot.

Beyond the food, the hotel is set up to handle more than overnight stays, with meeting rooms and wedding facilities available for those planning an event. Free on-site parking makes it straightforward for anyone arriving by car, and Drumlanrig Castle nearby gives visitors a reason to venture out during their stay.

We received a friendly welcome from the gentleman behind the bar, who sorted out an issue quickly and efficiently. He assisted with our bags, which was really appreciated. The rooms are clean, nicely appointed and comfortable. The ensuite shower room is small, and the sink is in the bedroom. We enjoyed a fantastic meal in the restaurant - one of our party (a 90-year old) mentioned several times how excellent his meal had been and it was the best he'd had for a long time! Due to the breakfast chef's annual leave, we were only offered a continental breakfast but it was more than adequate. The service from everyone was friendly and natural.

We always loved having our dinner here but they seemed to have changed the menu completely and shortened it. The food was no where near the standard from last year! greasy battered fish, greasy chicken burger. Plus no more Scampi, no more delicious gammon steak and no more Specials of the day! Not sure if the chef has left or they’re cutting back on quality. Disappointed ☹️ on a plus note the chips were good 😳

We'd normally use one of the cafes, but I fancied a pint of Belhaven, so we lunched at the famous Star Inn. Handy little table up by the bar, good service, prompt delivery of our meals, and handy for topping up the beer too. Food was well-cooked, really delicious. All in all an enjoyable relaxing lunch, and it's certainly a place we'll return to next time we visit Moffat.
