Built in 1859, Captains Row – Esk View is a Victorian former sea captain's residence that retains period character throughout. The building commands views across Whitby's harbour, with glimpses of the abbey from some rooms. An open fire anchors the first-floor living spaces, where you'll find a sitting room, separate dining room and kitchen equipped for proper cooking – electric oven and hob, dishwasher, two fridges and freezer mean you can prepare meals for the whole group without constraint.

The five bedrooms are spread across three floors. Ground floor holds a double and two singles in one room, plus a second bedroom with a double bed and its own wet room. The first floor has the main living areas. Above that, two further doubles each have an ensuite shower room. The top floor contains a fifth bedroom sleeping five – a double plus two singles – with its own shower room and television. In total there are five bathrooms across the property. Bed linen, towels and fuel for the open fire are included; six beach towels are provided separately. The enclosed garden and patio have a table, chairs and barbecue, with a further small sitting area at the rear. Two cars park on site, with additional space on the street behind.

The property sits within walking distance of the golden beach, the working harbour, town-centre shops and restaurants, and the ruined abbey. Steam trains from the North York Moors Railway pass by regularly en route to Pickering. No smoking inside.

This is an absolutely beautiful place. We were two families of 4 and one couple and had plenty of room. The house is decorated really well and is ideally situated with great views and two allocated parking places with other street parking available.

Absolutely beautiful townhouse with fantastic views of the harbour. I'm sat here with my morning coffee listening to the seagulls and I can honestly say it's perfect!

Our group of 8-10 40-70 year olds have been visiting Esk View for a weekend in November or December for nearly 10 years now. It's always a pleasure whether we self-cater, have caterers there or eat out. The location great to walk into Whitby (but not easily if you can't access stairs).
