About Elford House

Whitby's historic quarter, harbour and coastal paths are all within easy reach of Elford House on Prospect Hill, along with pubs, restaurants and spots for fishing, cycling or watersports. It's a handy base for exploring the town's abbey and seafront without needing to rely on public transport, since free on-site parking is provided.

Elford House itself is an adults-only guesthouse set in an Edwardian home, with straightforward, comfortable rooms rather than anything showy. Each room has an en-suite bathroom, free Wi-Fi and drinks provided, and breakfast is included to set guests up for a day out. There's a garden and outdoor seating for relaxing when you're not exploring, plus 24-hour reception for flexible arrivals.

It suits guests who want a no-fuss, adult-only stay in a period property close to Whitby's main attractions rather than a hotel with extensive facilities. The location on Prospect Hill puts the town's sights, walking routes and eateries within comfortable reach on foot.

Lovely room. Hot showers. Comfy beds. Reasonable cost. Would recommend. Very close to the town centre and local restaurants and shops.

Grim, foreboding and disgusting. I'm writing this from room 12 here. The curtains hang like the tattered flags of a fallen king and poorly applied wallpaper is peeling from the walls like a Victorian garret. We booked this for an overnight stay. We received no contact from the owner until we arrived and called them to say we had arrived and could we get in. The owner made up a story of not having correct contact details, then eventually gave us the code for the key box. Upon actually gaining entrance, we were greeted by what could be mistaken for student accommodation, apart from the uncomfortable and rank stench permeating the building. We made our way to our top floor room, passing the toilet for Room 3 (oddly on the first floor where room 3 is on the ground floor. Gods help anyone with a dicky tum and mobility issues). Once we finally got to the room, we were greeted by a double bed, a tiny TV and some garden furniture. The bathroom has a shower, sink and loo. The complimentary toiletries were a tiny bar of soap. And a bottle of shower gel. Which might have been left by a previous guest. Or actually contain bleach. I didn't care to try it. We spoke to the owner about our room as we'd booked a deluxe double and there's nothing deluxe about this. The owner became aggressive and hung up telling us not to call him again. We paid nearly £100 for a small, slightly smelly, dingy room. The mattress was soft, but the pillows were hard. According to the website, Elford House has been recently renovated. I'm not sure what the renovations are, but peeling wallpaper, badly fitted laminate and no extractor fan in the bathroom is not a recent renovation. I wouldn't stay here again if it was the last hotel in Whitby. Please avoid this miserable hole.

Don't expect too much staying here. The communication is nonexistent so had to call for the code for the key lock box. As you enter the building it is unwelcoming and there is an odd unpleasant smell. There is no one there to greet you only phone numbers to call. You won't get the room you booked so be careful. They are false advertising as we booked a deluxe double with king size bed and area to relax and we got shoved in the very top of the building with double bed and 2 garden chairs. They have apparently just renovated but room 12 has wallpaper falling off the walls, floor planks of laminate flooring that move and to say you get complimentary toiletries is a joke, you get a bottle of radox and a tiny hand soap and that's it. On their website it says spacious Deluxe Double rooms offer king size double beds. Is it king size or double it can't be both. I would not stay here again and feel I have been ripped off paying £95 not getting the room we payed for and when we questioned it being told not to call again aggressively as we have what we paid for. Shocking. Would not recommend and couldn't wait to get out the place.

Room 4 on the ground floor. Very roomy, clean and comfortable. Twin beds large with 2 pillows and a duvet. En suite with a large shower area and quality electric shower. Modern sink and toilet. Towels were quality.
