Hollins Farm Shepherd Huts - Tawny Owl Hut

North Yorkshire

Hollins Farm's Tawny Owl Hut is a traditional shepherd's hut – a compact, self-contained building designed for two people. It sits on a working farm deep in the North York Moors, surrounded by rolling countryside and rural quiet. The hut is entirely yours for the stay, with its own entrance and parking space for one car on site.

Inside is a single open room combining bedroom, living and kitchen areas. The kingsize bed sits alongside two armchairs and a woodburner for warmth on cooler evenings. The kitchen section has a gas hob, microwave, fridge and basic equipment for preparing simple meals. An en suite shower room is built into the hut itself. Bed linen, towels, electricity, heating and wifi are all included, plus logs for the stove. There is also an external shower room in a converted barn nearby, available if needed. Outside, a shared garden space has seating, a firepit and barbecue, though a pond on the grounds should be noted if you're visiting with children.

The location works well for walkers – the Coast to Coast trail is accessible from here – and for anyone wanting to explore the moors on foot or by bike (bike storage is provided). The darkness of the area means clear night skies are common. No smoking is permitted in the hut.

Beautiful hut on a beautiful property set in nice grounds, Welcomed by friendly owner with scones and flapjack and it had tea, coffee, milk and butter all nice touches. Views are spectacular and there are owls in the grounds. They also have a barn as a communal area, with couches air fryer, freezer and other useful items. Easy to reach Saltburn, Whitby staithes and other east coast places. Would highly recommend to anyone.

We stayed for 5 nights in the Tawny Owl Shepherd Hut, and it was absolutely fantastic 🦉 The hut had everything we needed for a very comfortable stay. We were able to make simple meals in the hut and toast marshmallows on the chimenea. We made the most of the spectacular views across the dale and sat on the decking for hours. We greatly appreciated the birdlife -especially the nesting barn owls, who treated us to magical hunting flights every evening -as well as the lapwings, curlews, and a pair of redstarts. We also enjoyed walks in the local area. Karen and Graham are superb hosts. They were friendly, responsive, ensured we had everything we needed, and made our little holiday extra special. Thank you so much 🙏

Thank you, Karen for the hospitality we received in Tawny Owl Shepherd's Hut. The welcome, the baked goodies and plenty of tea, coffee and milk allowed us to settle in with a brew on arrival. We stayed for a few days where we had some wonderful early April weather. The hut is clean, comfortable and cosy. It had everything we needed. Good location and stunning scenery by day. If you are fortunate with the weather, the clear night sky without any light pollution is beautiful. Only a 6 minute drive to the Co-op in Castleton for any provisions. An ideal place for walkers, a retreat, or a base to access the many towns/villages in the North Yorkshire Moors. Having showed us their plans, I am sure that this place will be in great demand.

Absolutely superb stay! If there were more than five stars to give on the ratings, we would be giving more! The view over moorland and farmland, ever changing with shifting light and shade, is breathtakingly beautiful. The quiet calm of the place, teeming with wildlife, and so immersed in nature simply feels healing. The hut has been really well thought out. A large and comfortable bed, a generously sized shower and a bathroom that is roomy for the size of this type of accommodation, give an experience that is more like a well appointed hotel suite rather than a shepherd’s hut. The attention to ensuring good functionality of the place meant that there was pretty much nothing that needed the finding of a workaround, as is often the case in similar accommodation. Self-catering was straightforward, armchairs comfortable and practical, the wood burner stove adding welcome warmth and comfort, the Wi-Fi worked well enough and little things like bath sheets rather than skimpy towels which are all too often more common, made the whole experience exceptionally relaxing. We would absolutely recommend this place to anyone, and will certainly be back. In fact, if we could stay and never go home, we’d certainly do so!
