Whitby's harbour and beach are a short drive away, as are the fishing villages that cling to the Yorkshire coast—Robin Hoods Bay, Staithes and Runswick Bay all within reach. The North York Moors themselves surround the property: cycle tracks and bridle paths start from the door, and the market towns of Pickering, Helmsley and Kirkby Moorside are straightforward drives. If you want to ride the steam train through the Esk Valley, Whitby station connects to Goathland and Grosmont. The area holds castles, abbeys and grand houses to visit on rainy days.

Surprise View is a converted 18th-century byre on one level, sleeping four in two bedrooms—a double with ensuite bathroom, and two singles with ensuite wet room. The living space is open plan, with a wood-effect stove, dining area and kitchen equipped for self-catering. Heating is included October to April. A private garden with seating and barbecue sits outside, along with parking for two cars. Bed linen, towels and wifi are provided. A shop and pub stand a mile away. The property is not suitable for children under 15, and the garden contains a pond with steps.

We've been regular guests at Surprise View cottages for seven years now. Each time the cottage has been immaculate and welcoming, the owners always friendly and helpful without intruding. The kitchen is well equipped for self catering, however there are several nearby pubs offering excellent food to tempt you away from home cooking. This is a working farm which adds to the interest. There is plenty to see and do in the surrounding area. All in all a superb base for a relaxing break.

We were reminiscing about a holiday we had many years ago and after Googling we found it. Surprise View cottage one of the best accommodations we have stayed in on our travels round Yorkshire. It was an upside house with bedrooms downstairs. It is close to KirbyMoorside and Hutton le Hole. We travelled all round Ryedale and it was lovely to go back to Surprise View Cottage We had a lovely Log Burner which we needed as it was wintertime. The cupboards in the kitchen held all the condiments you would need. The owners were very helpful. Everything was there that we needed. We ate at the Royal Oak Inn in Gillamoor. We had to stay an extra night as we were snowed in and next day we made our way very carefully over the moors through Hutton le Hole. It is one of our favourite cottage holidays and still talk about it after all these years
