About Pitch on the Wall Campsite
Dubbed Hadrian's Wall country, this was once the land of the Romans. It's hard to imagine the world of crossbows and armour now, but timeworn battlements, fortresses, and ramparts will help you to travel back in time. Tucked into the Northumberland countryside just five minutes from historic Heddon-on-the-Wall and within 15 minutes of Newcastle, this small, family-friendly site offers a proper back-to-basics escape with non-electric grass pitches, portable toilets, and running water—no frills, just the rural experience.
Dogs are welcome year-round to romp through the greenery, and campfires are actively encouraged (firepits available on site, wood for purchase). Quiet after 11pm keeps the atmosphere peaceful. Several pubs and shops sit within a five-minute drive, or arrange grocery delivery direct to your pitch. With the 75-mile UNESCO World Heritage Wall on your doorstep and a network of hiking and cycling routes fanning out across the sloping countryside, it's a fine base for exploring Roman Britain—though some find the facilities a little sparse for longer stays.

Good communication from the campsite by text message (I prebooked) with some tips and guidelines. Easy and convenient to access from Hadrian’s Wall Path. The field is very spacious and plenty of room for everyone. Toilets were clean and toilet roll was available. Bins located way too far from camping area and lack of recycling option is a remiss for those wanting to be more eco friendly.

A very basic campsite with only portaloos and a water tap. Grass quite long and on the Newcastle airport landing flight path. If you are walking Hadrian’s wall then it is a perfectly adequate and low cost place to stay on the first night.

While the location is ideal for walkers, and there aren't many camping options around Heddon, the campsite is really not very well maintained. While of course you can't control the rain, a bit of care and maintenance of the field would have made the site much better - without proper drainage and exceptionally long grass, the site quickly became a water logged bog. There's only one water tap and it was almost impossible to get to with the bogginess. The portaloos were fine, but again the area around them was a muddy boggy mess. As with other reviews, this site just can't cope with rain - which is quite a common occurrence around here!
