About Barcaldine Castle

Benderloch, just outside Oban on the Argyll and Bute coast, is where you'll find Barcaldine Castle, a genuinely historic building turned adults-only bed and breakfast. Surrounded by countryside and mountain views, it trades on real character rather than manufactured charm, with preserved period rooms that guests get to experience alongside modern comforts like en-suite bathrooms and free WiFi.

Rooms come with drinks and open onto a setting built for slowing down: a great hall warmed by a fireplace, a bar for evening drinks, and gardens and a picnic area for taking in the outlook. Mornings bring a freshly cooked Scottish breakfast, and staff are known for sharing the castle's history along with attentive service. Practical extras include 24 hour reception, laundry service, luggage storage, free on-site parking and an electric vehicle charge point.

Beyond the castle walls, the area suits fishing, cycling and watersports, with pubs, restaurants and entertainment nearby for evenings out. It's a base that mixes genuine historic atmosphere with easy access to the Argyll countryside, without pretending to be anything other than what it is: an old castle doing bed and breakfast rather well.

We spent 2 nights at Barcladine Castle. It was such a wonderful experience. The suites were opulent. The bathroom was surprising excellent for a 400 yearn old castle. So much history. I am somewhat sad that the neither of the ghosts haunting the castle made any fuss while we were there. The staff was was very good! I highly recommend Barcladine Castle!

Amazing property and staff. It’s a castle—in Scotland. Does it get any better? Rooms are decorated uniquely, beds are comfy, staff is helpful and witty. The water does get super cold when someone flushes the toilet anywhere In the castle, but that’s easy to overlook when the setting is what it is. The lounging room has a cozy fireplace to sit by—which also serves as the breakfast area in the am. There is small, inviting bar off the lounging room if you want some privacy. Breakfast was fresh and offered options for those who are gluten free. While it was windy the night we stayed, we didn’t hear anything unusual. Would visit again, but would want to try a different room for a different experience. Oh and it has hidden passages!!! I found all two of them.

Stunning 17th Century castle with 6 bedrooms, grand hall and bar. Steeped in history. Warm welcome and guided tour. Very large bedroom with huge ensuite. Real fire in grand hall in the evening. Full freshly cooked Scottish breakfast. We ate out in the evening at The Deck a the Isle of Eriska hotel a couple of miles away.

We stayed two nights over Easter weekend and had the most amazing time at Barcaldine Castle. The service was impeccable (thank you John, Patrick and Ash). We stayed in the Breadalbane room which was lovely. I highly recommend staying in a Scottish castle at least once in your life and this is the one to do it!
