About The Peacock at Rowsley
The Peacock was built in 1652 as a manor house for John Stevenson, steward to Haddon Hall, and later became the Dower House for the Manners family. It has been a hotel for well over a century and sits in the village of Rowsley where the rivers Derwent and Wye meet, roughly midway between Bakewell and Matlock. In 2025 it passed into the hands of Longbow Venues, an independent group that has kept the character of the building while refreshing the interiors.
Fifteen rooms and suites occupy the old house, each different in shape and outlook. Mullioned windows, thick stone walls and beams are the constants, with furniture from Haddon Hall set against contemporary pieces, and bathrooms fitted to a good modern standard. Some rooms overlook the walled garden and the river, others the village. There are no lifts and floors slope in places, which is part of the appeal but worth knowing.
The restaurant carries three AA Rosettes and a listing in the Michelin Guide, serving a tasting-led modern British menu. The bar is a proper flagstoned room with local ales and a fire, open to walkers as well as residents, and lighter food is served there through the day. Guests have fishing rights on stretches of the Derwent and Wye, which draws a steady fly-fishing crowd from spring onwards.
Haddon Hall is a short walk along the river path and Chatsworth is a ten-minute drive. Bakewell's market and the Monsal Trail are both close, as are the limestone dales around Lathkill. The hotel suits couples, small groups celebrating something, and anglers, and works well as a base for a few days rather than a single overnight stop.

We visited for Sunday lunch to celebrate our son’s 10th birthday, and it was the perfect way to end a wonderful weekend. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with birthday banners and balloons on our table, which was such a thoughtful touch and immediately made our son feel special. Our waitress was one of the sweetest, kindest members of staff we’ve ever had the pleasure of being looked after by. She genuinely couldn’t do enough for us and made the whole experience feel warm, personal and relaxed. Service throughout was exceptional. The food was outstanding. We’d heard this was the best Sunday roast in the area, and it certainly didn’t disappoint. Everything was beautifully cooked, full of flavour and exactly what you’d hope for from a top-quality roast. The live singer accompanied by guitar was the cherry on the cake, creating a fantastic atmosphere without overpowering the meal. Combined with the beautiful venue and stunning surroundings, it made for a really memorable afternoon. Exceptional food, wonderful staff, fantastic service and a beautiful setting. We left with very happy memories of our son’s birthday and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone visiting the area.

When we arrived we sat in the lovely bar area which gives such traditional old pub style, it was great, we had a drink and looked over the menu, once ordered we were taken to our table. The lady taking our drinks order was great and very knowledgeable about the wines. The waiter was equally as attentive making sure our wine & water glasses were full. The food was very very good, up there with one of the best roast dinners I have ever had, the bread to start was amazing too, the dessert was also amazing. I must go back asap! Thank you to everyone for making our lunch so special.

I had lunch with family here for a very special treat. We have eaten here many times over the years, but not for a long time. As a party of 8 we had a private room, beautifully set up. The service was impeccable, with formal professionalism tempered by warmth and genuine friendliness. The lunch was excellent. As it was a Sunday lunch, many chose the roasts (pork, lamb or beef) served with a voluminous Yorkshire pudding and some roast vegetables and a divine cauliflower cheese side infused with truffle (genius!). I chose the seabass, which was very fine indeed. The desserts were a high point of the meal - quite complex and refined and something for every taste. I had the white chocolate and strawberry - see photo - and another was the dark chocolate délice. Really very good indeed. This is a wonderful place and worth a visit, especially if you want somewhere a bit special.

We had a wonderful afternoon and Sunday Lunch at The Peacock a few weeks ago. The food was outstanding , such a good menu. The staff were fabulous , so attentive , they made us feel special. Nothing was too much trouble. We live locally, it’s so nice to have a Hotel like this on our doorstep. We highly recommend everything about this Hotel .
