About The Cross Keys

The Cross Keys occupies a building dating back to 1693 on Northgate, just off Peebles High Street, and has been run as a coaching inn in one form or another for most of that history. Today it offers seven ensuite bedrooms above a working bar and restaurant, each with complimentary WiFi and tea and coffee facilities.

The pub downstairs serves food and drink through the day in a cosy bar and beer garden, with breakfast included for guests booking their room directly with the inn. Bike storage is provided securely on site, reflecting the number of cyclists who use Peebles as a base for Glentress and the Tweed Valley trails.

Rooms are simple rather than luxurious, and dog-friendly, making the Cross Keys a good fit for guests who want a proper town-centre pub stay within a minute or two of the High Street rather than a full-service hotel.

Popped in for breakfast this morning. Lovely atmosphere, staff were very welcoming and friendly. Breakfast was absolutely delicious. Very well cooked and arrived at our table very hot. Very obliging at adapting some of the items in the full Scottish breakfast. We will definitely be coming back!

Jura is genuinely one of the best waiters I’ve ever had the pleasure of being served by. From the moment we sat down, he made the entire experience feel welcoming, relaxed, and professional all at once. It’s rare to come across someone who is not only excellent at their job but also clearly passionate about making sure every customer has a great time, and Jura absolutely delivers on that. What stood out immediately was his attitude. He greeted everyone with a warm smile, incredible politeness, and a level of energy that instantly made the atmosphere better. He wasn’t just doing the basics of taking orders and bringing food — he was creating an experience. He made us feel genuinely valued as customers rather than just another table to serve. That kind of personal touch makes a massive difference and is something you don’t see often anymore. Jura’s attention to detail was honestly exceptional. He remembered everyone’s orders perfectly, checked in at exactly the right times without ever being intrusive, and made sure drinks were topped up and everything arrived smoothly. Even when the place was busy, he stayed calm, organised, and incredibly efficient. You could tell he was handling multiple tables at once, but he still made every single person feel looked after individually. Another thing that really impressed me was how knowledgeable he was. He knew the menu inside and out, gave excellent recommendations, and answered every question confidently. His suggestions were spot on and clearly came from experience and understanding rather than just repeating what was popular. It felt like he genuinely cared that we enjoyed our meals and wanted us to have the best possible experience. On top of all that, Jura has a natural charisma that makes him unforgettable. He’s friendly without being over the top, funny without forcing it, and professional while still feeling approachable. He has that rare ability to read the table perfectly and adapt his service style to make everyone comfortable. Some waiters simply serve food — Jura creates an atmosphere that keeps people wanting to come back. It’s obvious that he works incredibly hard and takes pride in what he does. Staff like Jura are the reason customers return to restaurants again and again. He represents outstanding customer service in every sense of the word and deserves real recognition for the effort he puts in every day. I can honestly say that Jura turned a normal meal into an amazing experience. Exceptional service like this deserves to be recognised, and I would highly recommend anyone to ask for Jura if they get the chance. Absolute top-class waiter — professional, attentive, kind, and genuinely brilliant at what he does.

Fabulous pub and restaurant with separate rooms (7) for overnight stays. We called in for lunch for the five of us and were warmly welcomed by Will who has recently come to manage the place. Our meals were delicious and we all enjoyed the atmosphere, drinks were good and I was totally amazed by the size of the bar, the sitting and eating areas, and especially the staff and their hospitality. Thank you all for making our visit so enjoyable, we appreciate everyone both front and back of house, chef’s work hard to make everything enjoyable and they succeeded. We will return and I can heartily recommend this place to eat and drink.

Excellent venue for my group of 24 golfers. Staff could not have been more helpful. Great range of drinks suited everyone, even the fussy real ale brigade. Booked the excellent function room in advance in case it was busy on Saturday night but it wasn’t needed as it seemed the locals were coming out later for Scotland’s WC game at 2am.
