A Victorian hotel on Castlegate in Penrith, handy for the Lake District, with just 8 rooms, a bar and free parking.

About Station Hotel

Castlegate sits close to the heart of Penrith, a market town on the edge of the Lake District National Park, and it's here that Station Hotel occupies a Victorian building with a relaxed, informal feel. With only 8 rooms, it has the scale of a small town hotel rather than a big chain, making it a straightforward base for exploring Cumbria without the fuss of somewhere larger.

Rooms come with drinks and air conditioning, and guests have access to a restaurant and bar on site alongside a snack bar for something lighter. Breakfast is served each morning, and free WiFi runs throughout the building. Practical extras include a lift, laundry service, luggage storage and free on-site parking, while business travellers and small events are catered for with meeting rooms and wedding facilities. There's also a garden for stepping outside.

Beyond the hotel, Penrith itself offers pubs, restaurants and entertainment within easy reach, and the surrounding countryside opens onto the wider Lake District National Park. It's a fitting spot for those who want a town centre location with the fells not far beyond.

We finally arrived in Penrith after a dreadful issue with our train cancelled then a coach to arrive at The Station Hotel opposite the train station to be welcomed by really helpful and friendly staff ...The hotel is both quirky and historical with an old style charm and all homemade meals which is both exceptionally big portions...So do ask the staff before you order .....My daughter loved the carvery and it was both tasty and served hot which sometimes some of these meals aren't ......We did look at the desert menu but we're so full that we left it this time til we are back again......

I was here the first time in 2013 and the second in May 2025, both for one night on my way to Glasgow. The stuff is very friendly, unfortunatly when I was there no food was served due to kitchen technical issues. The house could need a renovation but its charming on the other hand. The location is great with some Pubs/Restaurants and Fastfood a short walk away and the Train station around the corner. But the castle ruin outside makes this place really special. I would come back here again when I want to explore the lake district soon.
