About The Castlegate Arms
For anyone planning to spend their days out among the fells and their evenings winding down over a drink, The Castlegate Arms on Castlegate in Penrith makes a sensible base. It's the sort of hotel that suits practical travellers rather than those chasing luxury: a place to sleep, park up for free, and head out from each morning.
Rooms come with en-suite bathrooms, free WiFi and drinks available to enjoy in your room, while the garden and outdoor seating give you somewhere to sit outside when the weather allows. There's 24 hour reception for flexible arrivals, luggage storage if you're heading straight out sightseeing, and pets are welcome, so dogs can come along for the trip.
Pubs, bars and restaurants are all close by, so there's no shortage of places to eat without needing a car, and a golf course and entertainment options are also within reach for those wanting more than walking. Penrith itself gives easy access into the Lake District, making this a workable base for exploring the wider area rather than a destination in its own right.
What guests say
We came for 1 night, simply not expecting a great deal. But sadly our experience was terrible, when we woke up In the morning we found that we had a freezing cold shower, with no one to call or speak to about. But worst of all was the service, we tried calling the place and reasoning on why we had a cold shower and some compensation. Yet they responded “it’s not our fault the boiler was broken, if I was there I would have sorted it.” They preceded every time we spoke to them to cut us off half way through our conversations and the manager was very rude beyond belief. This is the first review really of a place I’ve ever had to give, I am a very fair and reasonable person. But how they spoke was out of order; in the end there was no apology and didn’t even give us chance to speak to them. I wouldn’t advise staying here for both the quality we were given of the rooms but also the absolute joke of a customer service was provided!

Service great and rooms immaculate but you should know it's like staying above the rowdiest night club! Everyone shouting and very drunk downstairs. Bill charged for dogs notified to us on arrival and after rooms already paid for so no opportunity to change. Should be cheaper at the weekend!

We stayed here overnight as a way to break up a long journey. Firstly the lady behind the bar was lovely - really friendly as were the locals. It's a short walk into town/to sainsburys. However, the Ibiza sound tracks that went on til gone midnight was not so good. It was so loud, the floor in the bathroom vibrated. The WiFi didn't work, and the mixer tap shower predominantly ran cold. You couldn't deadlock the bedroom door so anyone with a key could come in. Subsequent to booking you're advised you have to pay an additional £10 for the dog (£60 if you don't warn them you're bringing the dog!). Which if your dog is muddy or sleeps all over the bed may seem fair - ours slept by the door in his own bed and didn't budge and doesn't moult. The rooms could do with a clean - I had someone's mascara on my pillow. But honestly if you need sleep on a long journey it's somewhere to put your head!

Small room above a very loud locals pub with loud mucosa playing till past midnight on a Sunday. Shower mixer tap didn’t work so shower either scalding hot or cold. Unacceptable.
