About The Shepherds Inn - Langwathby

Sunday roasts with generous portions are the talking point at The Shepherds Inn - Langwathby, a village pub-hotel set on the green in the Eden Valley near Penrith. The kitchen turns out homemade food across the board, and the bar and restaurant have built a reputation for hearty, honestly priced meals rather than fussy plates.

Rooms are en-suite and kept clean and comfortable, with free WiFi and drinks available in room. Breakfast is served each morning, and kids meals and packed lunches can be arranged for those out exploring the Eden Valley or heading further into the Lake District. Guests get free on-site parking, 24-hour reception and luggage storage, useful for early starts or late arrivals, and staff have a name for being friendly and helpful.

Outside, there's a picnic area for fine days, and the surrounding countryside suits walking and cycling. Golf and fishing can both be found nearby, along with further pubs, restaurants and entertainment for evenings when you fancy a change of scene. It's a straightforward, welcoming base rather than a luxury stay, and it delivers well on that promise.

Stopped here while on the way to a different eatery but it looked really nice, so thought we'd try it - and I'm pleased we did. The food was amazing - genuinely one of the best steak and ale pie I've had in a pub. My wife had fish and chips and that was equally fantastic. Cleverly, they have smaller plates which my wife had and even that was sufficient. The portion sizes are excellent. Would definitely recommend and have already pinned so we can return.

We originally found the Shepherds Inn via Google as a place to stop for lunch on our way up to Scotland. We were so impressed by the food and service that we drove a couple of hours, just to eat there again, a few weeks later. This week was our third visit in three months and we decided to stay overnight. The room was very nice, the only criticism was the small bathroom with no shelving to put our toiletries on. We had a king-size, very comfortable bed and the room was very clean and bright. The food again was fabulous. I have a fairly small appetite and had the starter, home smoked salmon on toasted sourdough bread with horseradish cream, caperberries and salad, was more than enough for a main course. My partner had parsnip and apple soup with homemade bread, which was gorgeous. He had the the steak and ale pie, which was delicious. We had apple crumble with cream and crème brûlée for dessert. The staff are really friendly and helpful. We can't wait for our next visit

We stopped here for lunch. The pub is very nice, good choices of beer. The staff are very friendly. I tried the lamb shank, it was beautifully cooked however, the sauce and the mash had too much mint, it unfortunately takes over the overall flavour of the lamb.
