What visitors say

Tate Britain is a magnificent celebration of British artistic heritage. Situated on the Millbank waterfront, the building itself is an architectural masterpiece. Standing on the site of the former Millbank Prison, the grand Neo-Baroque structure features a striking classical portico and a landmark dome that projects a sense of cultural permanence. The 2013 architectural intervention beautifully revitalized the interior, restoring the spectacular spiral staircase in the rotunda and seamlessly blending contemporary functionality with Victorian grandeur. Inside, the gallery holds an unparalleled collection spanning from 1500 to the present day. The absolute crown jewel is the Clore Gallery, which houses the world's largest collection of works by J.M.W. Turner. Standing before his luminous, atmospheric landscapes is a transcendent experience. Beyond Turner, the chronological walk through the galleries offers an extraordinary journey through art history, featuring the vivid romanticism of the Pre-Raphaelites, the striking portraits of John Singer Sargent, and powerful modern masterpieces by Francis Bacon and Henry Moore. The curation brilliantly balances historic depth with modern perspectives, offering clean layouts, excellent interpretive signage, and highly professional staff. With its stunning architectural spaces, peaceful ambiance, and monumental collection, Tate Britain remains an essential, world-class cultural destination in London. Defitetly recommended 👌🏻.

Tate Britain showcases the full spectrum of British art. Admission is free, and no advance booking is required. I came for the Pre-Raphaelites, but there is so much more to discover here. The way the works are displayed in some of the galleries can be overwhelming, but the atmosphere is calm and there are plenty of places to sit. I spend my break in the lovely Djanogly Café with a delicious carrot cake and an excellent coffee. Atmosphere: 5 stars Museum education / digital learning: 3 stars Recommended duration of visit: 3–4 hours Likelihood of returning: 5 stars Translated with DeepL.com (free version)

Tate Britain is one of my favourite public art gallery's because of the sheer range of British art work on display. By 'range' I mean across history (from the 1500s to immediate post-1945), multiple artists, variegated art movements and a density of genres. In other words there's so much here to please anyone who has a taste for the 'Britishness' in art. And in every visit there's something new to be discovered, most recently the fabulous but temporary 'James McNeill Whistler' exhibition (until 27-09-2026) that explores the uniqueness of this American artist who made his home and living in England for much of his life. Even if you don't have much time to spare on a visit to this cornucopia of British art history, at least make time to see the galleries housing the work of two 19th century geniuses: Turner and Constable. And by the way, the museum staff are incredibly helpful in guiding you through the many galleries.
