The Bosuns Locker, Royal William Yard

Photo: Cornfields Dancing

Royal William Yard sits on Plymouth's waterfront, a working marina where the River Tamar widens toward the open water. The Bosuns Locker occupies a converted building within the yard, giving you the rare combination of city-centre living and genuinely maritime surroundings. From the first-floor apartment, a Juliet balcony opens onto views across the Tamar estuary; if you arrive by boat, mooring space is available.

The studio is an open-plan space with a double bed, sitting area with television, and a kitchen equipped with oven, hob, microwave, dishwasher and washing machine. The shower room is compact but functional. Essentials like heating, electricity, bed linen and towels are provided, along with wi-fi; there is parking for one car on site. No smoking throughout.

The Yard's waterside location puts you within easy reach of Plymouth Hoe and the historic Barbican, both walkable. The National Marine Aquarium and Plymouth Pavilions are nearby, as is the Plymouth Gin distillery. Regular passenger ferries depart from the Yard itself for the Barbican and Mount Edgcumbe. This works well as a base for exploring the city without losing the sense of being somewhere apart.

Parking here is an expensive time consuming pain. Firstly space is relatively limited. Secondly the parking machines usually don't accept legal tender, ie cash. Thirdly mobile phone reception is poor meaning to download the required app is painfully slow, then the Android app is buggy and poorly designed. Should you be stubborn enough to persevere then the place is very busy at weekends. Many of the restaurants clearly struggle to cope, taking 30 minutes to serve you a coffee let alone a meal, all at over inflated prices Sadly the area is a victim of it's own success and beginning to feel rather pretentious by nature. Sorry but these days I really try to avoid going there.

Pretty area to visit, lots of restaurants to choose from and the market once a month makes a visit well worth it

Fascinating site of the old Royal Navy food and provisions stores. You will find many excellent cafés and restaurants here as well as ample parking. Well worth a visit.
