About Lamplighter Guesthouse

Citadel Road sits within easy reach of Plymouth's waterfront and the buzz of the city centre, and it's here that Lamplighter Guesthouse offers a no-fuss base for exploring Devon's coast. The surrounding streets mix local pubs, restaurants and entertainment with walking and cycling routes nearby, while fishing, golf and watersports are all within reach for those wanting to get further out into the county.

Rooms are single, double or twin, kept simple and bright, each with an en-suite bathroom and the option of drinks in the room. Guests have use of a lounge to relax in, and breakfast is included to set up the day. Free WiFi and 24 hour reception cover the practical side of things, and private parking is available, which is a genuine convenience given the guesthouse's city setting.

It's a classic, unfussy sort of guesthouse rather than a design statement, well suited to visitors who want a comfortable place to sleep and a central point from which to reach Plymouth's attractions and the wider Devon countryside.

First of all, it's not a 3-star hotel. It's a guesthouse. The location is a genuine highlight — well-placed and convenient — and the staff were friendly and welcoming throughout. That said, there were several issues that made for an uncomfortable visit. The mattress was extraordinarily soft — so much so that getting a decent night's sleep was a real struggle. The shower was an electric unit, which meant low water pressure and poor temperature control, making it frustrating to use. More concerning from a practical standpoint, the bathroom door lock simply didn't fit its latch, leaving no way to secure the door, and the main door lock looked like it hadn't been updated since the building was first converted — not exactly reassuring in a Victorian townhouse. One last oddity: the lounge walls are decorated with the owner's family photos and diplomas, which gives the communal space a rather personal, slightly quirky feel that not everyone will warm to. Overall, a place with genuine charm and a great location, let down by some maintenance and comfort issues that should be easy enough to fix. The location and staff keep it from a 1-star, but the sleep quality, shower, and security concerns are significant enough to make it hard to recommend without reservation.

Now this is a B&B I can recommend. Friendly staff, good breakfast, good price and the location is just outside of the city centre. Keep in mind that parking is not allowed on the streets, so you'll have to walk up to the hotel approximately 200 meters (uphill). The rooms are tidy but dated.

Quirky little bed and breakfast for the price I paid I can’t expect too much. However, I can’t think of any other hotel that I’ve been in where the toilet whilst private is along the corridor from the room. Very friendly owner, perfect for a night or two

The owner was creepy towards me and my friend, the room is extremely small with a 10 inch TV that plays static noises with the toilet close to the bed within the bathroom is rainbow holographic wallpaper, from the over exaggerated price for the room to the shabby decor I would never go back. Much better and cheaper places to stay that don't have creaky floors.
