Glanusk Estate - Glanusk Lodge

Photo: David Owen

Glanusk Lodge sits within 250 acres of Welsh countryside on the Glanusk Estate, surrounded by the peaks and valleys of Bannau Brycheiniog National Park. The Brecon Beacons have walking routes on their doorstep—the Trek26 passes nearby—and the landscape invites trout fishing, cycling, and exploring on foot. The Tower, a distinctive landmark on the estate, rises within the grounds.

The lodge itself holds seven bedrooms across two floors, accommodating up to 12 people. The ground floor includes a sitting room with an open fire and French doors onto the garden, a dining room, and a kitchen with an Aga for cooking. Two ensuite bedrooms on this level provide immediate access to bathrooms with baths or showers. Upstairs, five further bedrooms—some ensuite, one with only toilet access—offer flexibility for different group configurations. Four bathrooms serve the property. An enclosed, lawned garden with patio and barbecue works well for outdoor meals. Private parking fits five cars, a bike store is on site, and one well-behaved dog is welcome. Wi-Fi, heating, bed linen and towels are included. No smoking inside. There is an unfenced river in the grounds, which matters if small children are visiting.

Only used the grounds as part of a wedding party so no comment on rooms or service. What a charming place set in a simply stunning location.

The campsite has a great location for the Trek26 walk, which is a real positive but unfortunately the facilities let it down. Bathroom Facilities • Far too many touch points just to get into or use the bathrooms, which isn’t ideal for hygiene. • Sinks are poorly positioned and there aren’t enough of them. • The underfloor heating, advertised as a big selling point, is utterly pointless in practice. • Shower cubicles are cramped with barely any space to move or change. • Ladies’ showers don’t drain properly, leaving you standing in a puddle. • Water pressure was off — you could only control the temperature, and when the water was cold it sprayed everywhere. • Drains aren’t free‑flowing, adding to the sense that maintenance is lacking. • Not enough hooks, making showering and changing awkward. • Genuinely not sure when these areas are cleaned, as they didn’t feel fresh or regularly checked. Men’s Toilets • No sinks anywhere near the toilets. • You have to open two doors after using the loo just to wash your hands, which is impractical and unhygienic. Washing-Up Area • The washing‑up liquid was empty, suggesting the area isn’t monitored or topped up. The site is in a brilliant spot for Trek26, but the facilities are not practical, not well thought out, and don’t seem to be maintained to a good standard. For the price and expectations, it was disappointing.
