Glanusk Estate - The Tower

Photo: David Owen

The Tower is a one-bedroom conversion within the Glanusk Estate, a sprawling property near Crickhowell in Powys. You arrive at the first floor to find an open-plan living space anchored by a woodburner, with a dining kitchen and a double bedroom leading to an ensuite shower room. It sleeps two and comes with a private enclosed garden and parking for one car. One well-behaved pet is welcome.

The kitchen is equipped for self-catering, with an electric oven, hob and microwave. Essentials like bed linen, towels, heating and wi-fi are provided. Grounds on the estate include a barbecue area (shared with other properties), and there is an unfenced river within them—something to be aware of if you're bringing children or a dog. The 250-acre setting puts you among woodland, meadows and pathways, and the location suits anyone interested in walking routes like Trek26 or fishing for trout in the Usk valley.

I spent an enjoyable weekend camping at this wonderful site. The scenery was stunning.

Only used the grounds as part of a wedding party so no comment on rooms or service. What a charming place set in a simply stunning location.

The campsite has a great location for the Trek26 walk, which is a real positive but unfortunately the facilities let it down. Bathroom Facilities • Far too many touch points just to get into or use the bathrooms, which isn’t ideal for hygiene. • Sinks are poorly positioned and there aren’t enough of them. • The underfloor heating, advertised as a big selling point, is utterly pointless in practice. • Shower cubicles are cramped with barely any space to move or change. • Ladies’ showers don’t drain properly, leaving you standing in a puddle. • Water pressure was off — you could only control the temperature, and when the water was cold it sprayed everywhere. • Drains aren’t free‑flowing, adding to the sense that maintenance is lacking. • Not enough hooks, making showering and changing awkward. • Genuinely not sure when these areas are cleaned, as they didn’t feel fresh or regularly checked. Men’s Toilets • No sinks anywhere near the toilets. • You have to open two doors after using the loo just to wash your hands, which is impractical and unhygienic. Washing-Up Area • The washing‑up liquid was empty, suggesting the area isn’t monitored or topped up. The site is in a brilliant spot for Trek26, but the facilities are not practical, not well thought out, and don’t seem to be maintained to a good standard. For the price and expectations, it was disappointing.
