Best Western Plus Red Lion Hotel

Stayed here for 3 nights with a group of old friends. Best thing about it is the staff. A really warm welcome and they couldn’t do enough for us. Rooms are nice with new bathrooms, but not air conditioned, which was a problem in the current heatwave. There is a fan. I had a courtyard facing room so was able to open my windows wide, but some friends had a road facing one and were woken by traffic and late night revellers. The hotel is perfectly positioned in the centre of town. There is limited parking for small cars but there is a large public car park behind the hotel and they give you a special rate, so not a problem. Hotel is old (13th century) and a very interesting building. All in all good value and a pleasant place to stay.

The staff were very helpful, especially the young man on the desk in the evening. He gave us some very good recommendations for evening meals. The hotel is in a great location for seeing the sites of Salisbury. I was not very impressed with the rooms. The pillows were rock hard. The tea cups were not changed meaning we had to try and clean off the lime scum. The bathroom door was very hard to use. I got stuck in the bathroom, my friend could not open the door from outside. I was rescued by the young man in reception. The breakfast was just about adequate. The hotel food tasted as though it had been congealing for hours. The hotel food tasted chocolate from the machine was the best part of the breakfast.

Stayed for a couple of nights over Easter. Good location for sightseeing, easy walk into the centre of Salisbury. Really doesn't live up to its 4* rating. Although a historic inn, this shouldn't be an excuse for lack of refurbishment or being a bit dingy in some areas, giving an uncared-for impression. Car park was appreciated, if a little expensive, but easier than finding a long stay space in the town on a busy day. Room was a good size, with good amount of storage, but did need extra hanging for towels in the bathroom. Lighting needs bringing up to modern standards, there were some dark areas in the room, especially by the mirrors (which is where more light is needed). Lighting in bathroom was good, and plenty of hot water for the shower with good pressure. Heating was hit and miss. Room was above the car park gate which was quite noisy when opening and closing. Also opposite a club with outside garden which started to get busy and noisy at 10pm until the small hours, which we hadn't been warned about. Breakfast quite basic quality. More choice would be expected for 4* , however, poached eggs when ordered were well cooked and promptly delivered. Staff were reasonably helpful and professional, but we didn't need to interact with them very much. Having seen the other BW hotel across the road, I think it unlikely we'd stay here again if we ever visit Salisbury in the future

A very tired hotel. I chose this hotel because Booking.com showed it had parking, but when I arrived there, I was informed that they only had 5 car parking spaces. I had to pay £12 per day to stay in a nearby public car park. The hotel's website stated that good evening meals were available in the hotel but I then discovered they no longer served evening meals. I have always found Best Western hotels to be of a high standard, but the Red Lion hotel in Salisbury was simply not up to their normal standard.
