A grand Edwardian riverside hotel with 37 boutique bedrooms, a terrace bar overlooking the Stour and a kitchen built on Kentish produce.
About The Bell Hotel
The Bell has stood on the banks of the River Stour since Tudor times, though the building seen today is largely the result of an Edwardian rebuild, with large fireplaces, high ceilings and generous windows giving the public rooms real presence. Its 37 en suite bedrooms mix traditional and boutique styling, with several suites featuring four-poster beds and roll-top baths.
Downstairs, the riverside bar and restaurant make the most of the Bell's position, with an alfresco terrace looking directly over the water towards the Barbican, and a menu built around seasonal produce from in and around Kent given a contemporary spin on classic pub cooking.
Its position on Upper Strand Street puts the Guildhall, the quay and the timber-framed heart of the old town within a couple of minutes' walk, making the Bell a comfortable, central choice for exploring Sandwich.

We had lunch here on May Day BH. It was busy, but the service was excellent. The wait for food was very reasonable. The service was friendly and efficient and we had an excellent lunch. We both chose mussels, which came in a delicious sauce. It came with some toast and chips, with a finger bowl. Would definitely use again if in the area.

Stayed 2 nights - excellent location for nearby golf at Royal Cinque Ports and Royal St George’s, and for the charming small town of Sandwich. The room was small but clean and had a nice view of the river. Only negatives- bathroom was small and cramped and the hotel lacks an elevator. If you have luggage and golf clubs as I did, ask for a ground floor room. Otherwise you will have to lug your baggage and clubs up several flights of stairs

I enjoyed lunch here with a friend on Saturday. The food was delicious, and served in very generous portions by friendly, professional staff, who were excellent at accommodating my allergies. I will most certainly be returning, and, if I didn't live nearby, would book a stay here any time. If the gorgeous design of the restaurant is any indication, the place is entirely lovely. It all felt very clean and bright, and even the cutlery is pleasant to hold.

First, it was really hard to get anyone to answer the phone. I think I made five different calls over four days. I had originally made a booking through Expedia for the wrong dates. I cancelled it through Expedia on the same day. I then called the hotel directly and made a new booking for the correct dates. I never received an email or any written confirmation, only verbal confirmation over the phone. When the lady at the front desk finally called me back, she would not allow me to explain the sequence of events. Despite her talking over me and raising her voice, even after I went completely silent, she continued to berate me. I work in computer technical support and deal with customers every day. This is not how you treat your clients. Very rude.
