Lion & Pheasant Hotel

We had our recent wedding reception here. 37 guests with many of them staying in the hotel overnight. It was exceptional! The food was perfect - with many compliments from our guests. The staff could not have been more helpful and attentive. We were even given the crystal room again for a private guest breakfast the morning after. Lovely property in great location giving easy access to historic centre. Parking on site is good benefit (def worth following hotel guidance and approach so you turn right from opposite side of road to allow you to line up into narrow entrance!). Room very spacious and comfortable and breakfast was very good and generous. Evening meals both in restaurant and tapas bar also very good. All staff very helpful and friendly. Minor point is to note that rooms are on 1st/2nd floors and historic building means there’s no lift, hotel does flag this in booking process and staff were on hand to help with luggage if needed. We would stay again.

Review for *restaurant only* (I did not stay here!) I cannot fault the staff or atmosphere whatsoever (they were lovely!) but the food was not good (apparently it's a new menu). We had many dishes and disliked them all - I adore cooking and have many friends who are chefs, so know the importance of adequately trialling your menu beforehand and making sure the flavours are balanced and dishes well varied. It just doesn't feel like they did that here - in each dish the flavouring felt "off", components did not complement each other, there was nothing with moisture to combat how dry most of it was and rarely was it served with vegetables so it just felt unhealthy. We overheard another table saying similar things. Sorry to say but for little more than we paid you can eat a three course meal with light bites in-between at a Michelin restaurant not far (The Walrus)! I would've expected, if it were a new menu (they said it was the first day of it), that our feedback would be sought, but we were not asked. That was a shame! I hope they're able to seek more opinions before settling on the menu for good.

Jess was lovely in accommodating my request for a quiet room after a sleepless overnight flight. The hotel was charming and walkable to great shops, restaurants and parks. Would stay here again!
