Oswestry Retreats - The Snug

Shropshire

Couples after genuine peace will find The Snug fits the bill. This detached shepherd's hut sleeps two and comes with a wood-fired hot tub set in enclosed grounds – the kind of setup that naturally encourages you to slow down. The single bedroom has a double bed positioned to catch the morning light, and a wood burner provides warmth on cooler nights, with logs supplied. The open-plan living space keeps things simple: a kitchenette for straightforward cooking, a shower room, and a sitting area with a TV if you want it.

You get the whole place to yourself on a private parking area, though the approach is via a rough track. Bed linen and towels are included, as is heating and electricity. One small dog is welcome but must stay on a lead, given the sheep farming around here. Oswestry town sits on the edge of Wales, within reach of Llangollen's River Dee attractions, market shops and restaurants, and a collection of castles – Powys, Erddig and Chirk are all driveable. Chester is also close by. The Snug itself sits near Kinnerley and sits far enough out to feel remote, yet close enough to explore if you choose to.

Have to say for the price, it needs some money spending on it, like the bathrooms the showers need to be fixed. The cleaning was not very good and the blinds in one of the bedrooms we could not shut and one of the sliding doors would not lock properly also some of the utensils were in poor condition.

The retreat has lovely grounds, the places are nice and living area spacious enough for everyone. The staff were also friendly. Only criticisms are the gate/barrier wouldn't always open with the code and the house needed more cleaning, quite a few cobwebs around and sticky floor in the kitchen when we arrived.

We arrived at the coldest weekend of the year and the heating was not working, we were given 2 electrical radiators that were nowhere good enough to heat up the entire place. Bedrooms and bathrooms were freezing cold. We had to sit indoors with our thick coats the entire time. Promises were made that the problem was being fixed the next day, then the next but this did not happen. We ended up having to move lodges on the Monday when other people had checked out and another was made available. We did not think the owner was helpful or did enough to make our stay comfortable.

After waiting for a year as a group of three couples we had our second visit to Crest Country Retreats. There are sufficient toiletries for a day or two. Book direct through Facebook for the best prices. The lodges are set in a good position with country side views and “away from it all” if that’s what you want. Swings and slides for younger children and good-sized hot tubs for 6 adults. Public transport is available to Oswestry but expensive, over £6 each return. There are plenty of good walks for a couple of hours, we went north to Sandford Hall. There is pub in the village or Knockin “Bradford Arms” or even closer in the next village of Kinnerley. The Cross Keys is a very friendly well stocked pub serving really nice Sunday roasts. I have also provided a review for The Cross Keys.
