What visitors say
★★★★ Lovely hosts and a peaceful setting, but sadly not quite the premium experience we expected for a last minute midweek break costing around £440 for 3 nights. We had a lovely, peaceful break at Pheasants Roost. The hosts were extremely welcoming and helpful, the countryside setting was beautiful, and the bed was exceptionally comfortable. The bedding, bathroom and main living areas were clean. However, at around £150 per night once the additional charges were included, we did feel that some aspects fell short of the premium or luxury experience suggested by the listing. Although the main areas were clean, the hut and outdoor spaces would benefit from a more thorough deep clean and some maintenance. There were a significant number of flies (which cannot be helped in the countryside given the time of year) but it did mean the fly swatter was needed as in excess of 15 flies were already inside when we arrived in a small space, its quite a nuisance. Some of the fixtures and outdoor areas felt tired and attention to detail in terms of cleanliness were overlooked, cobwebs, spiders etc, the surfaces of the fan and top and inside of the kettle for example. The hot-tub steps, dog gate, planters and parts of the paddock would benefit from that bit of attention. The planters and wood look tired an there are two outhouses that did not lend itself to great views and looked tired, there was stagnant water in an outside container, which was unsightly and difficult to keep a puppy away from, a protruding nail on the fence near the car and a little bit dishevelled around the hut and underneath it too- with pipes fastened with tape etc. The paddock is understandably intended to feel natural and rural, but it looked rather neglected during our visit. The grass was extremely worn, the planters were tired and falling apart, and some form of practical outdoor ground covering could make the space feel much more inviting. It would also be helpful if the temporary dog fence could enclose the hut and hot-tub area rather than creating a completely separate section away from them- the fence itself is great in practicality but again, is tired and not the easiest to open. Inside, a few thoughtful improvements would make a considerable difference. Blackout curtains or blinds would help with the early morning light, while more comfortable dining chairs and a seating arrangement that allowed room for a dog bed beneath or beside the table would improve comfort and space...Better-quality cutlery, kitchen and barbecue utensils, drinkware and even the attention to detail in terms of the accessibility of the fridge/cabinet which did not close easily, and improved outdoor furniture would also better reflect the price and premium description- it felt rather budget. A few basic supplies were missing or limited, including hand soap, kitchen roll and separate towels for the hot tub. Newer cleaning cloths, an optional fly screen, an ice bucket and more substantial glassware would all be useful additions. The barbecue itself was quite poor quality and difficult to reconcile with the overall cost of the stay. I was also surprised by some of the additional charges after arriving, particularly £12 for the temporary dog fence and £28 to have the hot tub heated. The latter felt difficult to justify given that it appeared to require only a relatively small number of compacted logs. At this price point, we would reasonably expect hot-tub heating to be included or charged at a more proportionate rate. The checkout requirements were also quite extensive, particularly alongside a 10am departure time, luckily we did manage to get checked in slightly ahead of the 4pm agreed check-in. Sadly, the combination of these issues meant that we decided to leave a night earlier than planned. This was particularly disappointing because we had arrived genuinely hoping to fall in love with the place and find somewhere special that we would want to revisit.

The shepherds hut had everything you needed for a few nights stay. It was clean, tidy and had great countryside views. We made great use of the hot tub, fire and bbq (they really made the stay). The location was great within driving distance of York, some lovely beaches and some great local towns. With the addition of the portable fence / gate you can make the area secure for dogs. Overall we had a lovely weekend - thank you!

Lovely shepherd’s hut in a quiet, peaceful spot next to open fields. The dark skies were perfect for stargazing from the hot tub. The hut had modern fixtures, a powerful hot shower, and the log burner kept it cosy all night. The host was kind and very helpful. Highly recommend!
