Applebarn Holidays - The Bungalow

Photo: Applebarn Holidays

The Bungalow is a single-storey converted farm building on a working estate near West Pennard, three and a half miles from Glastonbury. You arrive into a generous open-plan kitchen, dining and living area where an 85-inch television dominates one wall and a convertible pool and dining table sits ready for use. Full-width doors open onto the garden, where your private hot tub awaits; parking for two cars is provided on the property.

Three bedrooms are arranged on the ground floor. The first contains a king bed with an ensuite shower room; the second has two single beds; the third is set up as a zip-and-link super king, though the beds can be separated into singles on request. A family bathroom with a bath and walk-in shower serves the other two bedrooms. Electricity, Wi-Fi, bed linen and towels are all included. The enclosed back garden comes with patio furniture. One dog is welcome at no extra cost. Smoking is not permitted.

The Bungalow is one of four converted buildings on the farm; guests can use the shared tennis court on site. The nearest town is Glastonbury, home to the tor, the abbey and the high street.

We stayed in the farmhouse and had an amazing time. There was everything we could need, and more. This is a working farm area and this is reflected in the landscape, although the view across the farmland to Glastonbury Tor is stunning, and visible from the hot tub. The water pressure in my ensuite shower was a bit lacking, but the main bathroom was fine. If I'm being picky, I would like to see outdoor friendly plastic 'glass'ware available for use outside. The farm shop is great and has a great range available , particularly if you're planning a barbeque (I'm not sure if there is one available or not.... ) The burgers were super tasty.

We really enjoyed our stay at the bungalow, it’s such a beautiful place. We especially loved having the pool table, hot tub and the views of Glastonbury Tor. The sun sets next to the Tor and we were lucky to see some stunning ones. Trish was extremely quick to respond to messages, which we appreciated. There were some nice treats for when we arrived such as biscuits, chocolates, tea, coffee, milk which was a nice touch. The recliner sofa and huge tv was great for relaxing in the evenings watching Netflix. I had a little issue with working the hob as I’m not very tech savvy 😅 but we googled the make and model and found instructions. We were honestly so sad to leave, it’s been such an amazing trip. Thank you Trish and JT, we hope to come back to stay again.

Lovely Stay, but a Few Points to Note We had a wonderful time at Applebarn in Glastonbury, and there were so many great aspects to our stay, particularly the location and the spacious interior. The property is set in a beautiful rural area, yet still within easy reach of Glastonbury town. We loved being able to see Glastonbury Tor right from the property, and it was fantastic to walk to it directly from the barn. The interior is lovely, very spacious, and well-equipped, with a great utility area that made it easy to manage laundry during our stay. The home was comfortable and offered plenty of room for our family of four, with the kids having space to relax. However, there were a few things that didn’t quite meet expectations. One of the main issues we encountered was the hot tub. While we were informed that it wouldn’t be ready for our arrival, we’ve stayed at other properties where hot tubs are shut off the night before departure, making them ready for the next guests and ensuring that guests can start their stay with a warm, relaxing soak. Unfortunately, the hot tub lid was broken in half, which made it difficult to remove, and the water didn’t feel as warm as we’d hoped. As a family that enjoys hot tub breaks, this was a bit disappointing and not up to the usual standard we’ve experienced elsewhere. There were a couple of other small points to consider as well. There were no baking trays available in the kitchen, which made meal prep a bit tricky. We did appreciate the bottle of Prosecco left for us, but personally, we would have preferred something like milk and a few tea bags for a more practical touch upon arrival. Additionally, the stairs could be a bit of a challenge for younger children – they’re very steep, wooden, and slippery when wet, so I’d recommend caution if you have small ones. The children also found the bunk beds uncomfortable, and the curtains didn’t block out the light fully, which made it a bit difficult for them to sleep well. Another thing to note is that the property is very much overlooked by adjoining holiday cottages, so if privacy is a concern for you, this might be something to consider before booking. Overall, we had a great stay at Applebarn, but there are definitely a few areas where the property could be improved to make it a more enjoyable experience for families. Despite these points, the location and overall ambiance were fantastic, and we still had a memorable time.
