Couples and small families will find Stables suits a peaceful rural retreat. This two-bedroom cottage sits within the grounds of Cloncaird Castle near Ayr, where 113 acres of woodland, a river and a pond create the setting for longer stays. Both bedrooms have ensuite shower rooms, and downstairs there is an open-plan living space with a kitchen equipped for cooking, a separate toilet, and a sitting area with a fireplace.

Each bedroom contains a zip-and-link bed that can be separated into singles if needed. Bed linen, towels, wifi and heating are included; logs for the fire are provided to start you off. Two cars can park on site. The cottage is entirely yours for the duration of your stay, with no smoking indoors. A travel cot and highchair are available if you ask when booking.

Kirkmichael village, less than a mile away, has a shop and pub. The Ayrshire coast lies within 10 miles, with sandy beaches and walking trails. Nearby are Culzean Castle and the 2000-acre Dumfries House estate, both worth a day trip. The grounds themselves offer fishing and woodland walks that occupy a quieter day.
