A large traditional hotel on Torquay's seafront, well suited to families and couples wanting sea-view rooms and classic afternoon tea.
About The Grand Hotel
For travellers after a classic seaside break rather than anything boutique, The Grand Hotel on Torquay's seafront delivers the traditional version well: 132 rooms, many with sea views, a formal restaurant, and staff who are consistently described as helpful. It suits families with children, couples looking for a spa weekend, and anyone drawn to the Devon coast who wants a hotel with proper facilities rather than a small guesthouse.
Rooms come with en-suite bathrooms, room service and drinks available, and there are family rooms for those travelling with children. The hotel has both an indoor and an outdoor swimming pool, a gym, a spa and sauna, a bar, and a garden with outdoor seating. Breakfast and kids' meals are available, and afternoon tea is a particular strength of the restaurant, though some guests have found rooms in need of freshening up and food arriving less hot than it should. It's also set up for weddings, with lift access, porter and concierge services, and luggage storage throughout.
Outside, the seafront location puts golf, fishing, cycling and walking routes within reach, along with watersports, pubs, restaurants and entertainment nearby. Pets are welcome, making it a straightforward base for exploring the Devon coastline without needing a car for evening meals or a walk along the seafront.
What guests say
We were originally booked for Abbey Sands Hotel Torquay, but contractors had overrun on completion of works.. so the hotel group moved our reservation to the grand hotel Torquay, what can I say what a beautifully presented hotel walking into the reception you are met by polite efficient front of house staff. I like the art novue era & really liked what I was seeing. A rather beautiful hotel. Our room was excellent, very well presented clean and tidy with a view overlooking the perfectly maintained facade of Torquay train station, not for some maybe but it was perfect in my opinion. The restaurant was very nice food. 10/10 really enjoyed my stay. Return I definitely would.

We had a truly memorable afternoon tea at The Grand Hotel in Torquay, a gift from my daughter. Myself, my daughter, and my two daughter-in-laws were all delighted by the experience. The setting, with its stunning views over the bay, was simply perfect. The food was lovely, and though there was a minor mix-up with one dish, it was handled with such professionalism. However, the real highlight of our visit was the phenomenal service from Lumi, who worked alongside her husband, Felix. I have never encountered such outstanding service anywhere before—Lumi is pure gold dust. I sincerely hope The Grand Hotel recognizes just how exceptional she is, as she truly elevated our entire experience.

After a really bad start, which was rectified. We were transferred into family room which was nice and large. Please be aware balconies are accessed by climbing out of a window (not advised). The hotel is in a beautiful location and best to book sea view. What really made our stay were 2 beautiful people Felix and Luminita in the restaurant, we would highly recommend booking a table and experience the lovely atmosphere of Felix and Luminita.

We stayed at the Grand Hotel in Torquay in July 2026 with our two month old baby and it was a genuinely distressing experience. On arrival our first room, number 224, was dirty with a rotten wooden bath panel. We were moved to room 308. The real problem was the heat. Despite outdoor temperatures of only 25 degrees during the day and 14 degrees at night, our room reached 29 to 30 degrees. This is dangerously hot for our baby. We spent both nights terrified of overheating risk. The window in room 308 opens only 5 centimetres. There is no air conditioning. We were given two fans, but one was faulty. When we requested a portable AC unit, we were told they only have fans and cannot control the weather. This is not a weather issue. It is a building design and ventilation failure. The room traps heat like a greenhouse with no escape. We also suffered noise disturbance from the neighbouring room, which added to two sleepless nights. It is a shame because the location is beautiful, but the rooms are not fit for safe habitation. We cannot recommend staying here, particularly with a baby or anyone vulnerable to heat. Would we stay again? Absolutely not.
