About Trecarn Hotel Torquay
Trecarn Hotel Torquay suits travellers after a straightforward, wallet-friendly stay on the English Riviera rather than a polished boutique break. With 126 rooms across five floors, it's set up for group getaways, family holidays and returning regulars who value low prices over frills, and pets are welcome too.
Rooms are en-suite, with accessible options and a lift for easier access, though some rooms show their age and could do with more thorough cleaning. Where the hotel earns its keep is downstairs: the restaurant serves generous buffet-style meals, kids' menus are available, and the bar keeps prices reasonable, with staff regularly singled out as friendly and helpful. Outdoor seating and a picnic area give extra space to relax, and the hotel also hosts weddings.
Torquay itself is on the doorstep, with golf, fishing, watersports, cycling and walking routes all nearby, plus pubs and restaurants for evenings out. Parking is chargeable and located nearby rather than on-site, worth factoring into travel plans before booking.

What guests say
My experience at the Trecarn Hotel was awful. I’m a housekeeper myself and went on a group trip here and i’ve never known anything like it. The rooms were clean when we went in, but it was outdated and boiling in the rooms and the fans weren’t doing anything. Had to change rooms as the 1st room we had was on the first floor and the lift was out of order and we had an elderly person staying in one of the rooms. One of the rooms had mould in it and the rooms were that hot that the milk we brought went out of date by the next day as there is no fridges and the room is boiling. Tea trays never got replenished, there was stains/dirt on the towels looked like they hadn’t been changed and beds never got made, towels or linen never got changed and the bins were both full to the brim when we left as the housekeepers didn’t clean them and never replenished the toilet rolls. Hotel also said they didn’t have any other rooms available, despite the fact barely anyone was there. Entertainment was good at best, could’ve used newer and more popular songs not old time songs so could be improved there but overall nothing to say about that. Staff looked like they didn’t wanna be there, there wasn’t a huge range of staff, 2 house keepers, 2 waitresses and 1 waiter, 1 chef and 1 person working at the bar so they must be overworked as it was the same people. Breakfast was okay most of the days, could use a wider range but other then that no complaints about that. The food for the rest of the trip, dinner and such were all very obviously not made fresh and all out of a can or microwaved. Turkey was dry, fruit was out of a can as it didn’t taste fresh and there wasn’t a huge range of things to pick from each evening. The veg and the curry was very obviously pre made out of cans or as a microwave meal. Overall the food could be a lot better, not microwaved and not out of a can and actually cooked fresh and in front of the guests like some hotels do.

This hotel is shabby, old and tired. I have actually stayed here more than once because its cheap, but I still manage to get a little more disappointed every time . This time the bathroom stunk so bad of urine it was like having a shower in a public toilet ! And they couldn’t find me an alternative room. Front reception is always very friendly and helpful, but it must be tough for them dealing with all the complaints . If the quality of your hotel is important to you then don’t choose this one.\

2nd stay at the Trecarn and both times have been absolutely fine for the money paid. Yes it's an old hotel, yes the floors squeak from time to time, yes there are some cosmetic issues if you are looking hard enough but value wise it was perfect. Double room was spacious and clean, as was the bathroom. Staff at reception were friendly, street parking I was able to find a spot near the hotel without too much hassle. As long as you know you are getting what you pay for then you'll have a fine stay.

Nowhere to park at a short distance. Room was very clean and tidy, but had outdated socket for bedside light only. Mattress really firm. Front desk very friendly. Breakfast had many things missing at 09.15. When they were finally replenished it was too late.
