About Beryl Country House

Beryl Country House is a small Victorian Gothic mansion set in thirteen acres of parkland on the edge of Wells, reached along a private drive that gives little hint of the city just a mile away. The house has been run by the same family for decades as an adults-only guest house, with eight individually decorated rooms mixing antique furniture with modern bathrooms.

Public rooms include a grand entrance hall, a drawing room and a dining room where breakfasts are cooked to order using local and often home-grown produce. Outside, manicured lawns and borders surround an outdoor swimming pool, open through the summer months, and there is ample private parking on site.

Its setting in the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty makes it a quiet base for visiting Wells, Wookey Hole and Cheddar Gorge, while remaining close enough to walk into the city centre for dinner.

My wife booked the Beryl for my 40th birthday earlier this week and we could not find a fault. The house is amazing, with beautiful decor and a warm and inviting atmosphere throughout. We were met by Holly and Teacup (Holly's adorable little dog) when we arrived and were immediately made to feel at home. We stayed in the Butterfly room which was big, beautifully decorated, immaculately clean and with views to die for. The hotel is quiet and relaxing, with amazing grounds to explore too. The breakfast was gorgeous every morning (with a good choice to pick from) and the afternoon cake was delicious. The owners and members of staff greeted us with a smile each day and were always on hand for any questions or recommendations for the day. We hope to be back very soon.

My wife and I chose the Beryl for our 11th wedding anniversary and, goodness me, what an amazing choice! It was, without a doubt, the nicest place I have ever stayed in. The room was beautiful with the most wonderful bathroom. The service was excellent, and the breakfast was amazing with the most delicious kippers I have ever tasted. The place has a lovely, homely, family atmosphere and we will definitely be going back. The number of superlatives I could employ are almost endless. There is a beautiful pagoda by a small lake where we sat on a beautiful summer's evening that will stay long in the memory. This place is amazing and I cannot praise it or recommend it highly enough.

What an amazing hotel, run by an extraordinary family and set within the most stunning grounds. Immaculate, luxurious, very comfortable, with beautifully manicured gardens within a short walk of Wells, and enjoying views across to the cathedral and Tor. Breakfast was delicious and the service was friendly throughout. Can't recommend Beryl enough. The rooms were amazing with super comfortable beds and were extremely well appointed. Afternoon tea was a treat, and some time by the pool adds to what was a perfect stay! Thank you. We'll be back.

We received a very warm welcome at Beryl House from Holly. The property is beautiful, the garden indescribable and everything very well maintained. We travel a lot, but I must say I have rarely stayed in such a clean and immaculate place. The breakfast was a great start to the day for us, the cheerful welcome and hospitality from Matthew will stay with us forever. We will definitely be back.
