Askham is a quiet village in the Northern Lakes with two pubs, a Michelin-starred restaurant at Askham Hall, and an outdoor swimming pool. Lowther Castle's gardens and adventure playground are nearby, along with cycle hire. Ullswater itself lies just 4 miles away, where the lake shore and Pooley Bridge draw walkers and swimmers year-round. The High Street fells rise 5 miles north; Helvellyn is 10 miles further on.
Nurses Cottage is a detached house with three bedrooms and two bathrooms, sleeping six. Downstairs holds a living room with a wood burner and smart TV, a kitchen/dining room with an induction hob and dishwasher opening onto the enclosed garden, and a utility room with a washing machine and tumble dryer. One bedroom has a kingsize bed and ensuite with a walk-in shower. Upstairs, a second kingsize bedroom and a third with two single beds share a bathroom with a bath and shower. The owners have kept the cottage's original character while bringing it up to date throughout. Wifi, electricity, bed linen and towels are included, along with fuel for the wood burner. There is parking for two cars on site and a bike store. One dog is welcome to stay free of charge. No smoking.
The location works well for exploring the fells on foot or by bike, or for days out on and around Ullswater. From the front door, paths lead to the River Eamont and local historical sites including King Arthur's Round Table and Mayburgh Henge.
