Families and small groups will find Tom's Cottage works well for a Lake District break. The house has three bedrooms (a kingsize, a double, and a single) and three bathrooms across two floors, sleeping up to five. The ground floor holds a living room with a woodburner and television, a separate dining room, and a kitchen equipped for cooking from scratch. A conservatory opens onto an enclosed courtyard garden with seating and a portable barbecue. Two cars can park on site. Bed linen, towels, heating and hot water are included; wi-fi and logs for the woodburner are too. Note that the property has steep spiral stairs and is not suitable for children under eight.

The cottage sits on rural land overlooking a trout lake, with views towards the Scafell Pike and Old Man of Coniston. The beach at Sandscale Haws lies three miles away. Nearby attractions include South Lakes Wild Animal Park and the Haverthwaite Steam Railway, making it straightforward for families to find things to do beyond the property itself. Windermere and Coniston Water are roughly 14 miles distant. A shop and pub are a mile and a half away.

Tom's cottage is a lovely, quirky cottage. Set just outside Dalton, it's a short drive to shops, attractions and pubs. It is a good size, able to sleep 4-5 people (we had 4 people very comfortably), and is well appointed. Most things that you would want within it, including a wood burner in the lounge. A great place to relax, and sit outside enjoying the peace and quiet punctuated by animal noises and the occasional train passing by. We would definitely recommend Tom's Cottage, and if you're in the area, try the Rose and Crown in Ulverston for Sunday roast, but make sure you book first.

Beautiful and very well-equipped cottage. Very warm and with a great log-burning stove in the living room, firewood included. Lovely peaceful location with outlook over the Burlington fishing lake – a great compromise between isolation but with the facilities in Barrow still on the doorstep. This isn’t the Lake District, but if you’re familiar with the area you’ll know how nice the Thwaite Flat area is, and Roanhead beach is a short distance away. Great for a change of scenery away from the mad tourist crowds of the Lakes.
