Walk through the doors of Waitby School and you enter a former schoolhouse transformed into a spacious family base. The ground floor opens into a living room with a woodburner and smart TV, adjacent to a kitchen/dining space fitted with electric cooker, dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer. The main bedroom is on this level too, with a double bed and French doors leading to the garden, plus an ensuite with a jacuzzi bath. Upstairs, a second double bedroom has its own shower room, while a third bedroom holds three single beds. A second toilet is tucked away on the ground floor. The place is heated throughout and everything needed for a week away—bed linen, towels, wi-fi—is provided.

The building dates from 1680, built as a schoolhouse on Waitby Fell about a mile and a half west of Kirkby Stephen. It retains original features including wood panelling and wooden doors, restored alongside modern comforts rather than hidden away. Outside, an enclosed garden has sitting areas and a barbecue, with parking for four cars on site including an electric vehicle charging point. The fell setting means genuine peace and uninterrupted views over the surrounding countryside, though the nearest shop, pub or restaurant is a mile and a half away. Walking and short drives to nearby towns suit the location well. No smoking in the property.

Dissapointed, Waitby School is looking tired, worn and grubby in places. We booked this cottage as PET FREE but there were lots of black dog hairs on the dining chairs in the kitchen and around the cottage. Lots of cobwebs and dirty grout in the bathroom wall and floor tiles, the plastic shower door strips need removing and cleaning or replacing as they are filthy. No welcome pack just a pint of milk supplied. Guests need to take everything with them . (cooking oil, condiments, laundry detergent ect) as there is nothing supplied at the cottage.. If you have low standards or low expectations then this is the perfect cottage for you. Don't expect luxury !

An absolutely gorgeous cottage. There is ample space for a family or a group of friends, but it is equally cosy for a couples get away. The views are absolutely beautiful and we saw incredible stars each night. The bedrooms are beautifully clean and well presented, and the bathrooms are stocked with everything you could need. Would recommend it to anyone in a heart beat!

The Cottage completely exceeded our expectations. Full of charm and character, the conversion is sympathetic and stylish, you get all the cosiness of a traditional property with every modern comfort you could need. The setting is absolutely stunning, peaceful and perfect for switching off from the world. We didn't want to leave! Already planning our return trip. Highly, highly recommended.

Had a lovely stay at the Waitby cottage, the building itself is absolutely beautiful and has been renovated tastefully. Beds were so comfortable and waking up to the peaceful sound of birds chirping was a dream. The kitchen is well stocked with utensils so it was easy for us to cook up a feast and the town is only a short drive away with everything you need. Would definitely recommend staying here if you ever get the opportunity!
