Just three rooms above a dog-friendly pub in Whitby, The Plough is best known for its hunters chicken parmo and lively bar atmosphere.

About The Plough

A hunters chicken parmo on the menu tells you most of what you need to know about The Plough, a small pub hotel on Coach Road in Whitby with just three rooms above the bar. This is a place built around its restaurant and bar rather than its bedrooms, and the kitchen's home-cooked approach has become the main reason people come back.

The three rooms are simple and comfortable, with breakfast included and free WiFi throughout. Guests have access to 24 hour reception and luggage storage, useful for early arrivals or late departures, and free on-site parking makes driving up from further afield straightforward. It's worth noting that upkeep has been flagged as inconsistent in places, so this suits guests after character and atmosphere over polish.

Downstairs, the bar draws a loyal local crowd, with a wide drinks selection and a genuinely welcoming, dog-friendly feel that extends to staff who know regulars by name. Whitby itself, with its coastal attractions, is within easy reach, making The Plough a straightforward base for exploring the area after a plate of parmo and a pint.

Good honest home cooked food, welcoming staff and dog friendly - what more could you need. I did not stay but can imagine all rooms are clean and well maintained. A local pub doing it's best for the customers.

Arrived to a locked up Pub. When the barman finally appeared, he informed us they were short staffed and there would be no food options that night (Tuesday) but that the chef always turned up on a Wednesday. We were shown to room 2. The clothes rail was hanging off the wall, the curtain tie backs too. The chest of drawers contained a pair of jeans (not ours) and the front had spills on it, the bedside cabinets were sticky and the kettle was dirty. The internet was non existent, even after 4+ attempts asking about it. We were allocated half a toilet roll for a 2 night stay. I don’t believe the room had been cleaned at all. We stayed because we had paid, but this is by no means a 4 star, not even a 3. The beer garden is sad and overgrown, the furniture rickety and unkempt. We visited the Plough 11 years ago and it was lovely, sadly today it is anything but and we will not return.

A TRUE GEM...What a delightful pub, warm, welcoming atmosphere, friendly bar staff, locals were very chatty, Dog friendly and the entire pub was polished clean to a very high standard. There is an ample spaced carpark, we loved the beer garden as it had shade for the dogs. The drinks were served at perfect temperature, in sparkling clean glasses, the bar Man was very hospitable, the toilets were sparkling clean, We will be returning to sample the food. I cannot comment on the rooms as this was just a rest bite from the drive so We weren't privy to that . Overall rating is 10/10.

Very over priced for very low quality food. Would definitely not recommend at all. A lot nicer pubs, with much nicer food for the same price nearby. Staff were nice and service was good but I was stupid enough to not check the price on the card machine.
