About The Brown Horse Inn

Windermere's fells and lakeshore paths are within easy reach of The Brown Horse Inn, making it a natural base for walkers and cyclists keen to get out into the Lake District. Fishing and watersports are close by too, along with a golf course, so there is plenty to fill the days beyond the inn itself, with pubs and restaurants dotted around the local area for those who fancy exploring further afield.

Back at the inn, rooms and pods are kept spotless and offer solid comfort without a hefty price tag, with en-suite bathrooms and family rooms among the options. Free WiFi, room service and packed lunches for the day's walk are all available, and reception runs around the clock, with a concierge on hand to help with plans.

The restaurant and bar are the heart of the place, drawing a steady following for generous, well-made food, particularly the Sunday roast, fish and chips, and homemade pies. Staff are attentive and the atmosphere is cosy, while the garden and outdoor seating make good use of fine weather. Free on-site parking rounds off a straightforward, well-run stop for exploring the area.

We stopped here for our evening meal on the way to our hotel. The staff were friendly and the pub was very well presented. Were arrived before food was due to be served but ordered drinks and waiting in the restaurant area. The staff informed us that the chef was happy to start early so we ordered and both enjoyed the most amazing Steak & Ale pie, it was packed with delicious steak and the pastry was spectacular. Followed with a sticky toffee pudding which was equally delicious. I will definitely be back to eat here again.

Stayed here a few weeks ago in the pods behind the pub. Would definitely recommend. We had brought our puppy along with us and the staff were so accommodating and gave him lots of fuss. The location was also perfect for visiting all the nearby villages. Felt the prices were also really reasonable for the area. If we visit the lakes again would definetly be stopping here again!

Had a wonderful stay. I would have given a 5 but didn't get a warm welcome on checking in, and also couldn't get the TV to work, had power but wouldn't switch on. I went to reception and staff seemed confused then sent a member of staff to resolve the issue, but feel this should have been checked before checking guests in. Wi-fi signal not very good hit and miss, comes and goes, my husband's phone just couldn't connect. Also I think blinds on the doors would be a good idea, we were in room 7 right next to reception and facing beer garden/seating terrace. Nice thick heavy curtains which totally blacks out the room but in daylight you want to appreciate the view and natural daylight. Quite a few other guest passed our room and looked in so kept curtains closed most of the time unfortunately. But on the positives bed was super comfy the room was spotless and food was absolutely delicious, we had the roast it was truly amazing and the breakfast was absolutely delicious staff sorry I didn't take the waiters name, so helpful and attentive. I had changed my mind after pre ordering my breakfast and it wasn't a problem or issue I asked if it was possible to change it slightly and I would pay if needed but said there would be any extra cost, I was watching the way he was so helpful and respectful to all customers 10 out10 to him and the chef. Our daughter and son in law and their fur baby stayed in 1 of the pods. Which are right near the pub/hotel, Absolutely loved their experience. I would highly recommend a stay here, only 10 minute drive to Windermere and 20 min drive from Kendal. I would definitely come again and highly recommend to friends and family. Thank you for our lovely experience Julie Vella

We used the pods out the back and it was a fantastic experience, all of it. The accommodation was comfortable and the bed was great. The shower had good power and heated well. The room came with all the little amenities it needed to and overall great value for money. The restaurant was so so so good. The food was unbelievable and the whole me u was so good it was hard to pick a dish to start with. Quite pricey but so worth it, fine dining indeed! The staff were so polite and professional too. Would definitely come here again
