About Middlethorpe Hall & Spa
Middlethorpe Hall was built in 1699 for a Leeds ironmaster and was later the home of the diarist Lady Mary Wortley Montagu. After a long decline it was restored in the 1980s and is now owned by the National Trust, with all profits going to the charity. It stands in twenty acres of gardens and parkland beside York racecourse, about two miles from the city centre and a five-minute drive from the Minster.
Accommodation is split between the main house and a converted courtyard of eighteenth-century outbuildings. Bedrooms are furnished with antiques, oil paintings and period fabrics rather than contemporary design, and several look out over the walled garden, the ha-ha or the parkland beyond. Suites in the main house are the largest and most formal; the courtyard rooms are quieter and better suited to guests who want to come and go without crossing the hall.
The restaurant is the centre of the operation, serving modern British cooking in three panelled rooms overlooking the garden, with a good deal of the fruit, vegetables and herbs coming from the kitchen garden. There is also a drawing room and library for afternoon tea. The spa occupies a separate building and has an indoor pool, spa bath, sauna, steam room and treatment rooms, with a small gym in the Victorian summer house.
This suits couples celebrating something, guests who want a country-house stay within reach of a city, and racegoers, as the course is next door. Parking is free and plentiful, which matters in York. Children over six are welcome but the atmosphere is quiet and traditional, and there is no lift to some upper floors of the main house. Walking into the centre takes around forty minutes along the riverside path.

We met up with friends who were staying at this hotel for a few days. As the weather was poor we stayed around the hotel and its grounds. The gardens are a delight and the hotel staff really helpful. We had a lunchtime snack of sandwiches (one beef, one salmon) which were well presented and very tasty and served by very smart and pleasant staff. A very relaxing place to be, close to York city but set in delightful countryside.

We just want to thank all the staff at Middlethorpe Hall for the wonderful job they did catering a reception following the funeral of our lovely auntie. It is the second time we have used them, and as per usual everything was 5 star, the food, the staff and the location. The venue cannot be faulted, and so many people commented on how it was a lovely place to hold a send off. We appreciate the effort that was put into looking after our family and friends, many thanks again.

Absolutely wonderful place to stay. I was lucky to stay in the main building. The rooms are fabulous, staff are so helpful and polite. Catering is just yummy. Overall, I would highly recommend and would definitely stay again.

A superb stay here for my birthday celebration. A beautiful four poster bed room. Attention from the staff was excellent. We would love to return for another birthday celebration sometime soon. Must not forget the lovely gardens and grounds - absolutely superb.
