About The Angel at Hetton
The Angel at Hetton is a fifteenth-century inn in a small village between Skipton and Grassington, and one of the properties credited with starting the gastropub movement in the 1980s. Under chef Michael Wignall it has held a Michelin star for several years, and the food is now the clear reason most people make the trip. The building itself keeps its low beams and flagged floors, but the interiors have been pared back to something quieter and more modern.
There are sixteen rooms and suites, most of them across the lane in converted cottages and a barn rather than above the pub. They are generous in size, finished in muted colours with good bathrooms, underfloor heating and proper seating, and some have their own terraces or garden access. Being separate from the restaurant building means noise is rarely an issue.
Dining runs to five- and ten-course tasting menus in the evening, with a shorter lunch offer and a bar area serving lighter dishes for those who do not want the full commitment. Cooking is precise and ingredient-led rather than showy, and the wine list is long. Breakfast is cooked to order and included for residents. Booking a table well ahead is essential, particularly at weekends, and rooms are usually sold with dinner in mind.
It suits couples travelling for the food, and anyone who wants a base for Malham, Grassington and the Wharfedale walks with somewhere genuinely good to eat at the end of the day. The village is very quiet with little else in it, so a car is needed. Prices reflect the kitchen rather than the location, and this is a place to visit for an occasion rather than as a budget overnight stop.

Overnight stay with dinner and breakfast on our 30th wedding anniversary. The room was lovely - spacious and well equipped. The welcome cookies were divine. Staff were highly trained to meet every customer need, friendly and attentive. The food is out of this world. We had the 10 course tasting menu for dinner. There were things on there that I'd never normally choose - eg eel - but I enjoyed every bite. Every course was a work of art. Breakfast was delicious too. Highly recommend for a special occasion.

This place is an idyllic place to stay in this beautiful area of the Yorkshire Dales. The staff are fantastic and the rooms are comfortable and beautifully decorated. The food is excellent however the tasting menu for me went on way too long and I became rather bored after about 2 hours. The breakfast is interesting. It is a set menu which is fine if you like everything but may fox some picky eaters. I have removed one star because even though the staff were excellent, I don’t like hotels that charge a service charge on the total bill including the hotel fees. I would rather that they just charge the correct rate required. I was given the chance not to pay it. But it made the last interaction rather awkward.

Absolutely flawless! Wonderful overnight stay with my mother. From the staff to rooms and meal everything was perfect. We had the 5 course tasting menu and added the wagu dish to it and all dishes were exceptional. Even the morning breakfast is served as a multiple course fine dining experience. I would recommend the Angel without hesitation - we are already planning our next visit!

Had a night’s stay with the full tasting menu and breakfast the following day. The room was very comfortable with everything you could want and just across the road. The food was great with every course full of detail and lots of flavours. There were 3 optional courses bringing it up to 13 (!) possible with no pressure to have them, we added wagu beef which was melt in the mouth and the cheese plate. Special mention to breakfast the following morning which was also excellent.
