Camping in Aberdeen

Aberdeen itself has no campsites within the city, but Aberdeenshire's coast and the Dee valley immediately to the south and west offer some of the best touring and camping country in the north-east, from sheltered riverside parks to exposed clifftop pitches above the North Sea. The terrain softens quickly once you leave the granite streets behind, giving way to farmland, birch woods and the wooded gorge of the Dee as it winds towards Balmoral, with Stonehaven's harbour and cliffs providing a dramatic coastal alternative a short drive south.

Weather here is typically Scottish east coast: drier and less midge-prone than the west, but with a cold wind off the North Sea that can be sharp even in summer, so a well-pegged tent and warm kit are worth having whatever the forecast says. Wild camping is legal in Scotland under the right to roam and the Scottish Outdoor Access Code, but the land immediately around Aberdeen is mostly farmed or residential, so a proper campsite is the practical option close to the city; genuine wild camping opportunities begin further out in the Cairngorms and Deeside hills. The camping season generally runs from Easter to the end of September, with June to August the busiest and most reliable for weather, though many local sites also welcome touring caravans and motorhomes well into autumn.
