Dess Lodge is a detached Victorian gatehouse with a working open fire—a genuine focal point for autumn and winter stays. The property sits on Royal Deeside between Aberdeen and Balmoral, surrounded by gardens on three sides and set back from the main road. It's a traditional stone building with period character, pitch pine interiors and a layout that spreads across two floors.

Downstairs holds the living room with its fire and sofa bed, plus a kitchen/dining room equipped for proper cooking—electric oven and hob, microwave, fridge and freezer, washing machine and tumble dryer. Upstairs are two bedrooms: one with a double bed and en-suite shower, the other with two single beds served by a bathroom with bath and shower. The property has oil central heating, and essentials like bed linen, towels and Wi-Fi are provided. Outside, there's a raised lawn with garden furniture and private parking for two cars.

The setting works well for exploring Deeside's villages—Ballater with its royal associations is nearby, as are Crathes Castle, Balmoral and older sites like Tomnaverie standing stones. Shops are 2 miles away and a pub 3 miles. The stairs are narrow and steep, the entrance has 4 steps, and the garden has a drop and a bank; the property does not allow smoking.

A very great lodge. Stayed here for a week and LOVED everything about it. It's a sumptuous house. The only fault is its location on a main road, it disturbed my sleeps. Other than that, it's a beautifulllllll house with remarkable royal decorations

Stayed here for a week in a beautiful period home but found the owner to be unfriendly - "Do not move furniture, don't use fire unless you're prepared to clean it, don't unplug anything...": large open fire but no wood, kindling, matches etc, bird feeders in the garden but prohibited from using bird seed, dirty towel found in washing machine, grubby plates, cutlery and drawers, and uncomfortable beds. House was otherwise lovely.

This place is great! The lodge is amazing and the rooms are a dream. Everything is done so beautifully and to a very high standard and you can see that a lot of thought has gone into the design of the whole place. Anna made us feel very welcome and looked after us perfectly. It was lovely to wake up to the view over the fields and sitting by the firepit in the evening was the perfect way to end the day. We will definitely be back!!!
