After finding ourselves suddenly stranded at 9pm with nowhere safe to stay, travelling with 2 small children, we spent over an hour desperately calling around trying to find somewhere that could help us. We had actually left our previously booked hotel because the room felt unsafe, the windows would not open and the temperatures inside were unbearably hot, especially with two young children. Thankfully we came across The Crown Hotel in Alton and spoke to Ben. Ben was an absolute credit to the hotel and a perfect example of going the extra mile for guests. From the moment he answered the phone, he was kind, calm and incredibly helpful. He quickly sorted a room for us and even went out of his way to open the windows and put a fan in the room because the night was extremely hot. After such a stressful evening, those thoughtful touches meant so much to us. The room itself was lovely, full of character with beautiful old beams that gave it a really cosy and welcoming feel. But honestly, the outstanding customer service is what made this stay unforgettable. Thank you Ben and The Crown Hotel for helping 2 very stressed adults and 2 tired little children in our hour of need. We would fully recommend this hotel to anyone based on the service alone.

The Crown Hotel in Alton offers excellent value for money and plenty of character. The room was very clean and comfortable, with lovely exposed beams and a charming historical feel. Despite the pub downstairs, it was quiet in the room and easy to get a good night’s sleep. The staff were friendly, welcoming, and helpful, and the bar had a relaxed atmosphere with a good range of drinks. Overall, it’s a comfortable stay in a place full of history and personality — and for the price, it’s genuinely great value.

First time staying in something that isn't one of the bigger hotels for years. Very impressed: the room was basic but immaculate, decent shower, and coffee making facilities. Tv small but not really here for that. Had dinner here last night and food was great (nice selection of pies), price was very good, as were the bar prices with a good range of ciders and ales. Paid £80 for two nights which I consider a bargain. Staff here are naturally friendly, and there is a nice atmosphere in the bar down stairs. A final nice touch is that during the day, prior to checking in, there was an issue with my room which required a plumber. I received a courtesy call advising that the plumber was running late; not an issue for as I was out playing trains on the nearby Watercress Line this weekend. I can't ever think of a time where concern for a customers stay has been front and centre like this - just a good sign of a well run place. Definitely returning when I am in the area next.

Just finished a 2 night stay here. And it may have been 2 of the worst night sleeps I've ever had. The building is old so the windows are also old. They sound like they are open even when they're not so at night time you can hear the patrons in the smoking garden as if they're in your room. And in the morning it's the traffic noise. The beds are the most uncomfortable things I've slept on. I had issues with my back and hips all night. Luckily I stayed during the week but I was still kept up till gone midnight by people walking around and talking etc. Can't imagine how it'd be on the weekend. The room itself is very tired and the cleanliness is questionable. I didn't have any working hot water in the sink, the tap just spun. The shower has mould in the corners and the plug hole had some dirt around it. The toilet roll holder and towel rails etc were all hanging off the wall. Every morning I've been woken up to an alarm. On the first morning it was switched off quickly but on the last morning it continued to beep for at least 45 minutes. The best part of the whole stay was the emergency lighting. The green light lit the room up when the lights were off making it difficult to sleep. All in all do not recommend and will definitely not stay again.
