About Crow How Country Guest House

Crow How Country Guest House occupies a grand Victorian building on Rydal Road, a short walk from Ambleside's centre towards Rydal, built in 1848 from stone taken from the ancient Rydal Hall before being converted into a guest house in the early 1930s. The two-acre gardens surrounding the property give it a distinctly rural feel despite the short walk into town, and several rooms retain period features including four-poster beds.

The guest house holds a 4-star Silver grading and has built a loyal following among repeat visitors, many of whom cite the breakfasts and the warmth of the welcome as reasons to return year after year. Its position gives direct access to several popular fell walks without needing to drive to a trailhead first.

Crow How suits couples and walkers looking for a quieter, more traditional stay than the town centre offers, while remaining close enough to Ambleside's shops and restaurants for an easy stroll in either direction.

Comfortable, clean, quiet, spacious lodging. Crow How is comfortable, roomy, unpretentious and a bit worn in a way that feels cozy. The location is quiet, tucked well off the road with gardens and fields out the front door, but just 15 minutes walk into Ambleside. Beautiful gardens around the house with chairs for relaxing. Comfortable beds, crisp linens, clean modern bathrooms and delicious breakfast. And a handy drying room for wet hiking togs. Although there were other guests, the rooms are spread out and the doors are solid - we did not hear anyone. The hosts are warm and friendly. Parking is in a private lot in front of the house and the house is at the end of a long driveway.

Excellent place and would go again. Staff were friendly, location is excellent just outside of Ambleside but a short walk away, lovely, beautiful and quiet setting, and very clean rooms with excellent beds and pillows. Walks recommended in the folder in the room - we did 2 of them. Nice tea and coffee and a bottle of water in the fridge. Drying room for soggy boots and clothes. A lovely full Cumbrian or vegetarian breakfast in the morning as well with a great selection. Nice Bamboo House amenities in the bathroom - very luxurious. Beautiful radiators! The only thing would be less single serving items might be better - milks in room, ketchup and HP sauce during breakfast. But otherwise fantastic and we would definitely go back.

Had a lovely, quiet, and cozy stay. Really enjoyed my time here—the breakfast was super fresh and the best English breakfast I’ve had. The staff were friendly and polite throughout. Definitely worth the money!”
