About Tarnfoot Farm Campsite
Tarnfoot Farm is a working farm campsite tucked beneath Loughrigg Fell, close to the small and little-visited Loughrigg Tarn rather than the busier Grasmere lake itself. It's one of the more basic sites in this part of the Lakes, and that simplicity is very much the point: an open field with fell views on most sides, well away from main roads, and no attempt at the facilities or organisation of a larger holiday park.
The site accepts tents only, with no electric hook-ups and no bookable pitches—arrival is first-come, first-served, and campers simply find a spot and pay on site. Facilities amount to two toilets, a sink for washing up, chemical waste disposal and drinking water, along with a small on-site sale of ice creams and soft drinks in season. There's no shop, no shower block and no wifi, so this suits campers equipped for a genuinely simple, low-cost stay rather than those wanting hot showers after a day on the fells.
Loughrigg Tarn itself is a short walk from the pitches and makes a popular wild swimming spot in warmer weather, while Loughrigg Fell rises directly behind, giving quick access to one of the best short, accessible summits in the central Lakes. Grasmere village is around three miles away by road or a longer but scenic route on foot over the fell, and Ambleside a similar distance in the other direction.

Beautiful little site on a working farm. The owners were really nice. There are just 2 toilets and no hand basins and a cold tap located in farmyard for rinsing plates and filling bottles. Most of the field is sloped. We just about squeezed our crafter mwb through the gate with a little contact on mirrors. Stunning lake just through the gate.

No rooms, it's a campsite. Two toilets and an outside sink to do dishes etc. Access to a lake if you fancy a nip or just a paddle. Lots of beautiful scenery and great walks all around you - that's what it's all about!

The Tarn Food Farm is the perfect base to explore the beautiful Lake District. It’s family-friendly with spot-on and extremely clean facilities. The provided water is tasteful and comes straight out of the mountains. You can follow some of the famous hiking tracks of Wainwright. The Rydal Cave is about a 90-minute walk away.
